Bears hammer Canton to complete weekend sweep
CANTON, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam men's hockey team (2-6) handed SUNY Canton (1-7-1) a 6-1 drubbing at the Roos House on Saturday night. Senior captain Mike Arnold (Didsbury, Alberta/Kingston Voyageurs) scored two goals, junior forward Ken Simon (Norwell, Mass./Philadelphia Revolution) added a goal and an assist and sophomore forward Matt Thompson (Anchorage, Alaska/Kenai River Brown Bears) chipped in two helpers to lead the Bears.
Arnold opened the scoring at the 13:04 mark of the first period with assists from sophomore forward Billy Pascalli (Deer Park, N.Y./New York Bobcats) and Thompson. Freshman forward Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y./Hartford Wolfpack) buried a pass from Simon for the eventual game-winner just 50 seconds later.
Simon added his own goal 56 seconds into the second period on assists from Thompson and junior defenseman Max Fogel (Williamsville, N.Y./Buffalo Jr. Sabres). McCamey made it 4-0 at 11:40 with a pass from senior captain Ryan Miller (Didsbury, Alberta/Arizona State). With under two minutes to go in the middle period, junior forward Zach Blake (Campbellford, Ontario/Plattsburgh State) scored an unassisted tally and Potsdam led 5-0 after 40 minutes.
Arnold scored a power-play marker 4:20 into the final period to give Potsdam a six-goal advantage. The Roos finally broke up the shutout four minutes later on the power play as Jake Ranahan solved Bears sophomore goaltender Austin Keiser (Dunwoody, Ga./Boston Bulldogs) to close out the scoring.
Keiser finished with 17 saves for his first win of the season. Louie Puig made 16 saves on 19 shots in the first 20:56 for the loss. Chris Marsillo allowed the final three goals on 23 shots in 38:59.
The Bears outshot the Kangaroos 45-18 on the night. Potsdam and Canton were both 1-5 on the power play.
The Bears are back in action on Friday, Dec. 6 when they head to Oswego State to take on the Lakers at 7 p.m.
