SUNY Potsdam Weekly Sports Recap- Week of January 21, 2013
The Bears' basketball, hockey, and swimming and diving teams all competed last week.
The women's basketball team hosted SUNY Plattsburgh and then traveled to Western New York to face Fredonia State and Buffalo State over the weekend. On Tuesday, the Bears fell to their rival Plattsburgh, 73-32. Junior forward Jessica Kouzan led Potsdam with 14 points. The Bears then dropped their game on Friday to Fredonia State, 75-57. Senior guard Katy Briedis was the top scorer with 16 points and Kouzan recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. On Saturday, a tough Buffalo State squad defeated Potsdam, 68-49. Briedis finished with 18 points, while senior forward Adedoyin Akingba added 10 points.
The men's basketball team struggled in their three game SUNYAC week. The Bears dropped their home contest to Plattsburgh on Tuesday, 85-63. The Cardinals used a 33-5 run in the second half to earn the decision. Senior Mark Lake, Jr. led Potsdam with 17 points. The Bears then hit the road to Western New York to face Fredonia State and Buffalo State. The Blue Devils were able to edge the Bears on a last second bucket in overtime to secure the 87-86 win. Freshman guard Joe Estramonte hit a three-point basket as time expired to send the game into extra time. Senior captain Curtis Pierce recorded a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Senior guard Josh Lambert would add 18 points in the loss. On Saturday, the Bengals of Buffalo State would handle Potsdam in a 83-57 decision. Pierce was the leading scorer for the Bears with 15 points. The senior increased his point total to 1,331 and is now eighth on the Potsdam all-time scoring list.
The men's hockey team squared off against ninth-ranked Plattsburgh on Friday. The Cardinals used three second period goals to defeat Potsdam 4-1. The Bears were forced to kill four Plattsburgh power plays and only trailed 1-0 after the first period. The Cardinals opened the gates as they connected on three goals in the second period to hold the 4-0 advantage going into the third period. Sophomore defenseman Dan McCamey notched the only Potsdam goal of the night in the final period of play to end the game at 4-1 in Plattsburgh favor.
The women's hockey team hosted Neumann College in for an ECAC West weekend at Cheel Arena. On Saturday, the Lady Bears held off the Knights in a 3-2 victory. Potsdam opened the first period with two goals from junior forward Alexandra Holowka and freshman forward Natasha Allen. Freshman forward Sally Mooney would notch the game winner in the second period of play to put the Bears up 3-1 going into the final period. Neumann would attempt a comeback but solid goaltending by senior Jen Conophy would seal the victory. The Knight received their revenge on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Potsdam. Junior assistant captain Jenn Crawford recorded the only goal for the Bears.
Swimming and Diving
The swimming and diving teams participated in two meets over the weekend. On Friday, the Bears swept North Country rival Clarkson University. The men edged the Golden Knights 149.5-144.5 and the women caimed the 133-121 victory. The Potsdam men's team was led by senior Alexander Taylor and junior Richie Zimmerman with three individual victories a piece. Taylor claimed wins in the 1,000 free (10:33.57), 500 free (5:01.15) and the 100 breaststroke (1:00.19). Zimmerman posted victories in the 200 free (1:50.71), 200 breaststroke (2:20.12), and 200 IM (2:02.94). The women's team had help from a host of Bears to secure the win. Sophomore Victoria Blakeslee touched the wall first in the 1,000 free (11:51.65) and the 200 back (2:24.98). Senior Liz Ringer closed out the meet with wins in the 50 free (26.70) and 100 butterfly (1:05.14). Junior Ghena Binzer finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:14.41) and 200 breaststroke (2:42.35). On Saturday, the Potsdam men defeated St. Michael's College 123-110 and the women fell 120-85. Sophomore Dan Costa, freshman Tyler Zapisek and Zimmerman were each triple winners for the men. Costa captured the 50 and 100 freestyle events in with times of 0:23.08 and 0:50.88 for solo victories. He also joined senior Ed Smith, Zapisek and Taylor on the winning 400 freestyle relay team, which posted a time of 3:33.3. Zapisek swam to individual victories in the 400 IM and 200 butterfly in times of 4:42.69 and 2:10.23. Zimmerman notched two solo wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:34.41) and 200 backstroke (2:06.79). Zimmerman was also on the winning 400 medley relay team (3:58.05) with freshman Chris Carlini, senior Marcus Domfort and Taylor. Blakeslee led the women with two individual victories and a relay win. She swam to first place finishes in the 1000 (11:39.8) and 500 freestyle (5:41.4) events and joined sophomore Emily Kanoza and seniors Kylie Barr and Ringer on the first place 400 freestyle relay team (3:58.3). Barr also won the 400 IM (5:15.06) and Ringer captured the 200 butterfly (2:27.56)
Male and Female Performers of the Week
Junior Richie Zimmerman is the Bears' male performer of the week. Zimmerman helped the Bears to two dual meet victories over Clarkson and St. Michaels this past weekend. On Friday, Zimmerman posted victories in the 200 free (1:50.71), 200 breaststroke (2:20.12), and 200 IM (2:02.94) to secure the 149.5-144.5 win over the Golden Knights. On Saturday, the junior notched two solo wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:34.41) and 200 backstroke (2:06.79). Zimmerman was also on the winning 400 medley relay team (3:58.05) in a 123-110 decision over the Purple Knights.
Freshman forward Sally Mooney is the Bears' female performer of the week. Mooney notched the game-winning goal in a 3-2 win over Neumann University on Saturday night. The freshman was also sworn into the ROTC that same night.
The Week Ahead Jan. 28 – Feb. 3:
The men's basketball team is back in action on Feb. 1 when they travel to SUNY New Paltz for an 8 p.m. tipoff.
The women's basketball team returns to action on Feb. 1 when they travel to SUNY New Paltz. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
The women's hockey team is back in action on Tuesday night when they host non-conference opponent Hamilton College at 7 p.m. The Continentals defeated Potsdam 4-2 in Clinton on Dec. 4.
The men's hockey team is back in action next weekend as they end their epic 13-game road trip in Western New York. Potsdam faces Fredonia next Friday at 7 p.m. and Buffalo State at the same time on Saturday.
The swimming and diving teams wrap up the regular season next weekend as they host Oswego State on Saturday, Feb. 2 at 2 p.m.
