Costa, Coombs each win three events as Potsdam swim team splits at SLU


The SUNY Potsdam men's and women's swimming and diving team returned to competition after a 40-day winter break and came away with a split at Saint Lawrence University in Canton on Saturday afternoon.

The men won 132-123 while the women lost 155-125.

Winning events for the men included junior Dan Costa in the 100 backstroke (57.50), 200 backstroke (2:06.08), and 50 freestyle (22.96), senior Richie Zimmerman in the 200 freestyle (1:57.58) and 200 breaststroke (2:18.33), sophomore Chris Carlini in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50), sophomore Tyler Zapisek in the 100 butterfly (2:15.08), freshman Ricky Blackburn in the 100 freestyle (52.29) and the 200-yard medley relay team (1:46.14).

Zimmerman, senior Jeremy Rose, Zapisek and Blackburn formed the four-man relay team for the men's squad.
Winning events for the women included senior Laurissa Coombs in the 200 freestyle (2:05.53), 200 backstroke (2:20.13) and 200 individual medley (2:20.20), freshman Kristin Canjura in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:18.21) and 500 freestyle (5:35.26) and the 200 freestyle relay team (1:49.16).

The women's relay team consisted of freshmen Rachel Malzacher, Jennifer Yeager, Stephanie Havens and junior Victoria Blakeslee.

Potsdam will return to the pool for competition Friday beginning at 4 p.m. at neighbors Clarkson University.

The Bears will then host Saint Michael's College starting at 1 p.m. from Maxcy Hall Pool.
