Swimming and Diving:  Teams split to open season at Skidmore


The SUNY Potsdam swimming and diving teams opened their season by splitting a pair at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs on Saturday with the men gutting out a 147-144 victory while the women fell 163-112.

Richie Zimmerman (Victor, N.Y. / Victor), Jeremy Rose (New Hartford, N.Y. / New Hartford), Tyler Zapisek (Syracuse, N.Y. / West Genesee) and Dan Costa (Spencerport, N.Y. / Spencerport) teamed to win the men's 400-yard medley relay (3:50.44) by better than a 10-second margin.

Zimmerman, a senior, kept it going in individual races by taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:55.25), the 100-yard freestyle (50.34), the 500-yard freestyle (5:12.72) and 200-yard individual medley (2:07.71).

Zapisek built upon his strong freshman performance from a season ago by easily winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:13.43) and the 100-yard butterfly (57.45).

Costa, a junior, took home the 100-yard backstroke in 57.01 and the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.23.

Newcomer Richie Blackburn had a winning debut in the 50-yard freestyle (23.14) while Rose notched a victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:31.75).

The women's team had their share of moments as well with senior Ghena Binzer (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker) taking first place in both the 100 breaststroke (1:14.76) and the 200 breaststroke (2:48.00).

Sophomore Kristina Blackstock (Watertown, N.Y. / Watertown) earned 153.75 points to take first in the one-meter diving event.

Both teams will be back in the pool for competition at Norwich University next Saturday, Nov. 9 in Northfield, Vermont, beginning at 1 p.m.

The Bears will hold their home opener the following Saturday, Nov. 16 and will host Brockport at 2 p.m.
