Volleyball: Potsdam ends regular season on high note by taking two matches; playoffs await

The SUNY Potsdam closed out their regular season on a high note by taking two matches at St. John Fisher in Rochester on Saturday.

First, the Bears swept host St. John Fisher 25-18, 25-22, 25-19 behind the play of junior outside hitter Liza Fields (Duanesburg, N.Y. / Duanesburg), who had a team-high 10 kills, and senior setter Lauren Manzo (Clovis, Calif. / San Joaquin), who had a team-best 20 assists, four kills and four aces.

The Cardinals fell to 14-16.

In the later match, Potsdam downed Alfred University 25-23, 25-23, 24-26, 25-16 to complete the two-match sweep.  The Saxons dropped to 3-26.

Potsdam (15-15 overall, 5-4 SUNYAC) was without Sara Anderson, who is nursing an injury.

But the Bears found strength from within as it got a lift from junior outside hitter Sharon Ofori (Bronx, N.Y. / John F. Kennedy), who had seven kills, and junior libero Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y. / Herricks), who had 17 digs, in the Fisher match.
The Bears also were able to reduce their total amount of team errors with each processing set and closed with 10 kills against just three errors in the third set.

Against the Saxons, Manzo had 25 assists, a season-best 11 kills and seven digs to lead the Bears.  Fields tied a season-best with 13 kills and 10 digs while Ofori had eight kills.

Potsdam will now prepare for the SUNY Tournament as it takes on Plattsburgh on Friday at 6 p.m. at host New Paltz.  The teams split a pair of head-to-head meetings this season.  The winner would play against top-seeded New Paltz on Saturday.
