Week of September 16, 2013

Men's soccer

The Bears (6-3) went 1-1 this past week with a hard-fought road loss at No. 22 St. Lawrence on Friday and bounced back with a sound 2-0 victory against Clarkson University at home on Sunday.

Potsdam played the nationally ranked Saints tight through most of the match by keeping it scoreless through the first 58 minutes.

The match could have swung into a different direction in the first half for the Bears.

Sophomore forward Tom Benedetto footed a beautiful lead pass to give junior forward Eduardo Figueroa a one-on-one situation with Saints' goalkeeper Aaron Costello.

Costello, who lunged to his left to make the save, secured Figueroa's valiant shot attempt.

In the opening minutes of the match, sophomore Ben Firlit raced down the sidelines for a shot on goal as well in the first half, but Costello came up with the save.

Returning back home to Maxcy Turf Field on Sunday, the Bears controlled the tempo for the majority of the match by earning a 14-8 advantage on shots.

Forwards Stephen Auyer and Eduardo Figueroa did the damage for the Bears.

In the sixth minute, Auyer put Potsdam in front, receiving a long pass from Figueroa and blasting it past Clarkson freshman goalie Michael King.

With 2:23 left, Auyer was pulled down by King inside the box. The Bears were awarded a penalty kick and Figueroa buried it to double the lead and put the game away.

Freshman goalkeeper Nick Davies made two saves to earn his second career shutout.

Women's soccer

The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-4-1) held 21st ranked St. Lawrence University (6-0-1) to just one goal with a strong defensive performance in a 1-0 loss on Wednesday night. Saints sophomore midfielder Emily DePoy scored the contest's lone goal.

The game started very even with tight defense and most of the play at midfield. Slowly St. Lawrence was able to tilt the field toward Potsdam's goal. In the 16th minute, Saints junior midfielder Holly Wark launched SLU's third corner kick of the contest. DePoy was in position to head the ball past Potsdam freshman goalie Lauren Haase for the eventual game-winner.

The Bears defense rebounded after the goal and didn't allow another strong scoring chance for the rest of the half. Potsdam's offense moved the ball well in the SLU end for the final minutes of the first half, but entered the break down 1-0.

Volleyball

The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team went 0-2 this past week losing at Saint Michael's in three sets on Wednesday and versus St. Lawrence in four sets on Saturday.

The team was seeking some payback after watching Saint Michael's College rally back for a five-set victory just 10 days earlier in the Victory Promotions Invitational.

On Wednesday night, the scene shifted to Saint Michael's home floor in Colchester, Vt., where the Lady Bears became more competitive as the match wore on, but ultimately fell to the Purple Knights 12-25, 18-25, 20-25 at the Vincent Ross Sports Center.

Seniors Jenna Blujus and Sara Anderson directed the attack for Potsdam (6-8).

Blujus wrapped up her fourth triple double by accruing 13 digs, 11 kills, and 10 assists.

Anderson, who was named on Monday as the SUNYAC Player of the Week for her All-Tournament Team performance in the RIT Invitational, nearly stretched her streak of matches with double-digits kills to six.  Anderson, a 6-foot-1 Lake George native, thumped eight more to her running total of 132 on the season.

In a match that may well be long remembered as a see-saw struggle that could have gone either way, the Lady Bears came up a few breaks too short in falling 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 16-25 to North Country rival St. Lawrence.

Down the stretch, it was senior Lauren Manzo setting up teammates Jenna Blujus and Liza Fields with cross-court feeds to solidify a 1-0 set lead.

Blujus had 25 digs, 19 assists and 11 kills to record her fifth triple double of the season.  Manzo had team-high 20 assists and seven digs, Fields contributed with nine kills, seven digs and two blocks while Gabby Arana had 23 digs.

Golf

The SUNY Potsdam men's golf team finished eighth at the Oswego State Fall Invitational on Monday. The host Lakers won the tournament with a combined score of 305. SUNY Delhi's A and B teams tied for second, finishing just a stroke behind Oswego with a 306. The Bears posted a 330 on the afternoon.

All five Potsdam golfers finished within a single stroke of each other. Junior Ryan Merriman and sophomore Kevin Doherty each tied for 30th with scores of 82. Sophomores John Hickey and Conor Talty and senior Harrison Davenport each posted a round of 83 and finished 34.

Cross Country

Both the men's and women's cross country teams were off this past week.

Featured athletes of the week

Men
Junior forward Eduardo Figueroa had the game-winning assist to Stephen Auyer and later scored his fifth goal of the season on a penalty kick in a 2-0 victory against Clarkson University on Sunday.

Eduardo continues to build onto his impressive resume as the Bears' all-time leading scorer with 56 career points (23 goals, 10 assists).

The Bears (6-3) are one win away from tying the program's highest amount of single-season wins since 2002.  In 2011, Potsdam won seven games.  In 2002, it won eight games.

For that, Eduardo is our Bears' male performer of the week.

Women
Senior setter Jenna Blujus wrapped up her fourth and fifth triple doubles of the season by accruing 13 digs, 11 kills, and 10 assists on the road against Saint Michael's and 25 digs, 19 assists and 11 kills against St. Lawrence.

The Baldwinsville native has now achieved the feat against Saint Michael's twice, and once against St. Lawrence, Emmanuel College and Plattsburgh State.

For that, Jenna is our Bears' female performer of the week.
