POTSDAM, NY- The men’s basketball team kept it close for most of the game but visiting Buffalo State proved to be too much as they defeated the Bears 76-65 on Friday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
Four Bears scored in double figures led by Olando Minott (Bronx/Samuel Gompers) who had 15 point and also five rebounds. Curtis Pierce (Brookly/George Westinghouse), Ben Walker (New Smyrna Beach, FL/North Country CC), and Anthony Williams, Jr (Brentwood, Upper Room Christian) all had 13 points. Williams, Jr. also grabbed 12 rebounds.
Justin Mitchell had 19 points for the Bengals.
Both teams were neck and neck in the first half as neither could generate any momentum. The largest lead for either team was eight points by Buffalo State with 6:38 left in the half. An 18-10 Potsdam run covering over five minutes would tie the game at 33 all following a Minott layup at 1:11. There were seven lead changes and four ties in the first half.
The Bears would keep the score close for most of the game in the second half. A jumper by Williams, Jr. would get them to within six at 5:29. The Bengals would push the lead to 13 but a layup and free throw by Pierce and a three-pointer from Walker reduced it to seven at 3:25. The Bears were only within eight at 2:36, but a Bengal three put them up by 11 at 1:15 and they converted three of four free throws and a layup in the final seconds to come away with the victory.
Potsdam hosts Fredonia tomorrow afternoon at 4 pm.
