POTSDAM, NY- The men’s basketball team held its own against visiting Oneonta but the Red Dragons proved to be too much in the end as they defeated Potsdam 79-66 on Saturday night. The Bears record is now 3-14 (2-9 in SUNYAC).
Two Bears scored in double figures led by Curtis Pierce (Brooklyn/George Westinghouse) with 21 points. He also grabbed six rebounds. Ben Walker (New Smyrna Beach, FL/North Country CC) had 16 points.
Brian Hooks led Oneonta with 21 points.
The Red Dragons got off to a quick 12-2 start. A 9-0 Potsdam run got them to within two points of the lead, 16-14, at 11:01. Oneonta increased their lead to 13 at 3:28 but a layup and free throw by Pierce made it a 10 point game and a jumper by Olando Minott (Bronx/Samuel Gompers) with 4 seconds left in the first half made it a 38-30 Oneonta at halftime.
The Bears kept pressure on in the second half and only trailed by seven with 5:32 left in the game. A 10-0 Red Dragon run, however, increased their lead to 17 points with 2:28 remaining and propelled them to the victory.
Potsdam hosts Buffalo State next Friday night at 8 pm on Bear Pride Night.
