Men’s Hoops Falls in Final Seconds

POTSDAM, NY- A three-pointer with 19 seconds left was all that visiting Fredonia needed as they defeated the men’s basketball team 58-53 on Saturday afternoon at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.

Antthony Williams Jr. (Brentwood/Upper Room Christian) led the Bears with 15 points. Joshua Lambert (Brooklyn/East NY Transit Tech) had 13 points and also grabbed seven rebounds.

Julius Bryant had 20 points to lead the Blue Devils.

The Bears got off to a quick start as they led 12-4 at 13:05. A 10-2 Fredonia run, however would tie the game at 14 all at 8:51. Both teams traded baskets and went into halftime with the score tied at 24-24.

The Blue Devils would scored the first 12 points of the second half to take a 36-24 lead. Potsdam would go on a 12-2 run to get within two points with just under nine minutes left. Williams Jr. came up big as he scored eight points in a span of just over six minutes of game-time with his final basket again getting the Bears to within two at 1:38. With 44 seconds left to play, Olando Minott (Bronx/Samuel Gompers) hit a mid-range jumper to tie the game at 53. Fredonia would end Potsdam’s bid at an upset when Jonathan Herrera made a three-pointer with 19 seconds to play and Bryant converted two free throws to seal the game for the Blue Devils.

The Bears will next host cross-town rival Clarkson in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 7 pm.
