Men's Basketball Falls to Utica in Season Opener

UTICA, NY- The men’s basketball team came back from a first half double-digit deficit but came up just short as they fell to host Utica 84-79 on Sunday afternoon.

Four Bears scored in double figures led by Anthony Williams ( who had 19 points. Joshua Lambert scored 15, Eddie Cross had 14, and Skip Schwartz had 11 points including 3-for-5 on three-pointers.

Patrick Goodman led Utica with 19 points and 11 rebounds.

Utica had the lead for most of the first half and pushed it to 39-25 with 3:44 to play. Potsdam would cut the lead to 45-36 at halftime.

The Pioneers would have an 11 point lead with 5:44 left in the second half but the Bears would go on a 12-4 run and following a layup by Williams would get to within three points with 1:20 left. Following a jumper by Goodman and a free throw, Cross hit a three-pointer with four seconds left to get the Bears to within three points again. Utica would then turn the ball over but Potsdam gave it right back and subsequently fouled to put Utica’s Kevin Johnson on the line and he sank two free throws to insure the victory.

The Bears next head down the street to take on cross-town rival Clarkson on Saturday at 4 pm.
