SUNY Potsdam Sports Recap - Week of October 24, 2010
The men?s soccer team closed out its 2010 season Saturday, while the women?s soccer and volleyball teams wrapped up conference play. The men?s and women?s ice hockey teams opened their respective campaigns with exhibition games.
The women?s soccer team split two contests this week, downing Morrisville 3-0 on Oct. 20, and falling 3-0 to Plattsburgh on Oct. 23. Freshman forward Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y./St. Lawrence Central) opened the scoring against the Mustangs and senior forward Cortney Poirier (Moira, N.Y./Brushton-Moira) scored the final two goals. Junior goalkeeper Caitlin Titus (Jamesville, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) recorded her third shutout of the season. On Saturday, Titus made nine saves in the loss to the Cardinals.
The men?s soccer team fought Clarkson to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 19, and fell 4-1 in its season finale to Plattsburgh. In a wild contest that saw both teams have chances to score, neither the Golden Knights nor Bears could find a game-winner. Sophomore goalie Joe Glackin (Latham, N.Y./Shaker) made five saves to preserve the tie. On Saturday night, Potsdam fought off the Cardinals for the first half, but Plattsburgh proved too strong in the second half. The Cardinals scored four second half goals to seal the victory. The Bears never gave up and it was a pair of seniors on Senior Night who connected to put Potsdam on the board. Ian Gadbaw (Norwood, N.Y./Norwood-Norfolk) buried a loose ball off a free kick from Ian Glaser (Naples, N.Y./Naples) to break up the shutout in the 89th minute.
The men?s hockey team took to the ice
on Oct. 20, to face Route 11 rival Canton in a preseason matchup. The Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by sophomore defenseman Brett Waters (Uxbridge, Ontario/Markham Waxers), senior defenseman Pat Choules (Bradford, Ontario/Kahnawake Condors), and senior forward Jordan DeLong (Perth-Andover, New Brunswick/Woodstock Slammers). After Canton closed the gap to 3-1 in the third period, freshman forward Brandon Couto (Bowmanville, Ontario/Cobourg Cougars) answered with the Bears? fourth goal. Junior goaltenders Trevor O?Neill (Bobcaygeon, Ontario/Stouffville Spirit) and Kevin McFarland (St. Louis, Mo./Woodstock Slammers) stopped 14 shots in 40 minutes and four shots in 20 minutes, respectively.
The volleyball team hosted SUNYAC Pool Play on Oct. 22-23. On Friday, the Bears fell to Oneonta and Plattsburgh by identical 3-0 scores. Against Oneonta, freshmen Dakota Pruiss (Wallkill, N.Y./WallKill) and Annie Smith (Burke, N.Y./Chateaugay) paced the offense with six kills apiece. Senior captain Erica Romaniello (Seiden, N.Y./Newfield) finished with 13 digs. Against the Cardinals, Pruiss again led the Bears offensively with 10 kills. Freshman Brittany Lapham (West Chazy, N.Y./Beekmantown) totaled 20 assists and 11 digs, while Romaniello posted a team-high 12 digs. The following day, Potsdam suffered consecutive 3-0 defeats at the hands of Cortland and New Paltz. Junior Sam Strader (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) and Smith combined for 18 kills to lead the offense against the Red Dragons. Romaniello finished with 19 digs, while Pruiss tallied 12 digs and four kills. In the Bears final home match of the season, Strader and sophomore Anne Fildes (Red Hook, N.Y./Red Hook) led the offense against the Hawks with six kills apiece. Romaniello registered a team-high 21 digs in her final home match as a Bear.
The women?s hockey team faced strong preseason challenge in the Durham West Junior AA Lightning on Oct. 24. Junior forward Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) recorded a hat trick to lead the Bears past the Lightning in a 4-1 win. Freshman forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) also scored for Potsdam and sophomore defenseman Nadine Cunningham (Bow, N.H./St. Mark?s Prep) recorded two assists. In goal, sophomore Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) stopped all 20 shots she faced in the first 29:24, while freshman Dawna Salvarinas (Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) made 17 saves in the remaining 30:36.
Male and Female Performers of the Week
Senior soccer player Ian Gadbaw is the Bears? Male Performer of the Week. Gadbaw closed out his Bears career with a goal against Plattsburgh on Senior Night.
Junior hockey player Annmarie Lewis has earned her place as the Bears? Female Performer of the Week. Her hat trick against the against Durham West helped the women?s hockey team get moving in the right direction with a 4-1 preseason win.
The women?s soccer team (10-9, 1-8 SUNYAC) wraps up its season when it hosts St. Lawrence on Oct. 27, for a 4 p.m. match.
The volleyball team (6-23, 1-7 SUNYAC) heads across town to take on Clarkson on Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. The Bears then close out the regular season with a tri-match at Geneseo on Oct. 30. Potsdam will face St. John Fisher in the first match and finish up with the host Knights.
The men?s ice hockey team opens up its regular season at Brockport and Geneseo on Oct. 29-30.
The cross country team heads to Oswego for the SUNYAC Championships on Oct. 30.
The equestrian team kicks off its season on the road against Cazenovia on Oct. 30, and then returns north to Canton to take on St. Lawrence on Oct. 31.
