Two Softball Players Honored
(POTSDAM, NY) Dana Vollmuth, a sophomore catcher at SUNY Potsdam, has been named to the 2009 All-SUNYAC Team, as well as, Bears Team MVP. Danielle Tierney, a freshman infielder, has received the Bears 2009 Coaches Award.
Vollmuth (Great River/East Islip) becomes the first Potsdam softball player to receive all-conference recognition. She led the Potsdam offense with a .408 hitting percentage which also placed her fourth among SUNYAC hitters. Vollmuth finished the year with 17 runs including 6 doubles and 5 homeruns as she tallied 19 RBIs. She was previously named the SUNYAC Softball Player of the Week on April 13th.
Tierney (Champlain/Northeastern Clinton) finished the season with a .318 hitting percentage while scoring 11 runs. She had 28 hits including 3 doubles and 2 home runs while adding 18 RBIs.
Bears Win Doubleheader at St. Lawrence

(CANTON, NY)The SUNY Potsdam women’s softball
team ended its season on a high note in sweeping St. Lawrence in a doubleheader
on Wednesday afternoon. The Bears took the first game 5-3 and the second game
3-1.
Brittany Pawlowski (West
Seneca/West Seneca) pitched the first game going seven innings and giving up
four hits, three runs (one earned), three walks, and she struck out five. At
the plate she went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI.Dana Vollmuth (Great River/East Islip) was
2-4 with a run scored.Allison Smiddy
(Ft. Covington/Salmon River) was 2-3 with an RBI.
The Bears got off to a 3-0
lead in the first inning.Heidi

The Saints answered back in
the bottom of the inning to tie the game 3-3. The score would remain that way
until the Potsdam
portion of the seventh.Malbeuf led off
with a bunt groundout followed by a Grebinger groundout to the shortstop.Breivogel reached on an error by the third
baseman and advanced to third on Vollmuth’s single.Megan Strough (Lorraine/South Jefferson) then
came in to pinch run for Vollmuth.Pawlowski singled to score Breivogel.Tierney then singled to score Strough and put the Bears up 5-3.
Despite walking a batter in
the bottom of the inning, Pawlowski got the final out on a fielder’s choice to
preserve the Bear win.
McCoy pitched the second game
and went seven innings giving up three hits, one unearned run and struck out
seven.Shayleen Soller (Brasher
Falls/St. Lawrence Central) went 1-3 with a double and a run scored.Dedra Palmer (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) went 1-3
with an RBI.
The Bears scored first in the
second inning when Soller led off with a double and thenlater scored off an error by the St. Lawrence
catcher.Potsdam would add another run the third and
then the fourth to up 3-0.The Saints
made it 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth and had two runners on second and third
with two outs in the seventh but McCoy got the strikeout to end the game.
The Bears now end their season with a final record of 13-21.

Bears Sweep Doubleheader from SUNYIT
(POTSDAM, NY)-
The SUNY Potsdam women’s softball team used great pitching and some solid
hitting to come away with a sweep of the visiting SUNYIT Wildcats on Tuesday
afternoon. The Bears won the first game 6-5 and scored the winning run in the
bottom of the seventh with two outs to take the second game 4-3.
Brittany Pawlowski (West
Seneca/West Seneca) pitched the first game going seven innings and giving up 10
hits, five runs, four walks, and striking out six batters. At the plate she
went 2-3.Dana Vollmuth (Great
River/East Islip) went 4-4 with two doubles, one run, and two RBIs.Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore/W.C. Mepham) was
2-4 with three runs scored, Danielle Tierney (Champlain/Northeaster Clinton)
was 2-4 with a double and one RBI, Allison Breivogel (Bellmore/W.C. Mepham) was
1-4 with a triple and two RBIs and Jessica Brower (Staten Island/Susan Wagner)
was 1-3 with one RBI.
The Wildcats got on the board
in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.The Bears tied the game in the bottom of the third on Tierney’s single
that scored Grebinger.Potsdam would add three more runs to take the
lead in the following inning on Breivogel’s two run triple and Vollmuth’s one
run double.Following a two run sixth
inning for the Wildcats to get within one run, the Bears got the runs back with
another one run Vollmith double and Brower’s one run triple.
SUNYIT would rally in the top
of the seventh as the first two batter singled to put runners on base.Juleah Vedder (Dolgeville/Dolgeville) doubled
and brought in two runs and was thrown at third base. Tracy Lee then popped out
to Allison Smiddy (Ft. Covington/Salmon River).Pawlowski walked the next batter and then gave up a Jane Burroughs
(Fonda-Fonda-Fultonville) single to put runners on first and second. She then
got Mary Casillo (Little Falls/Little Falls) swinging to end the game.
Meaghan Patterson
(Malone/Franklin Academy) started the second game and went four innings giving
up nine hits, three runs, one walk, and struck out five.Katie Nawrot (Clarence/Clarence) pitched in
relief going three innings and only giving up two hits and striking out two
batters. Grebinger was 2-4 with a homerun, two runs scored, and one RBI.Vollmuth was 2-3 with a homerun, one run
scored and two RBIs. Tierney went 1-3 with a homerun, one run scored, and one
RBI.
Like the first game, SUNYIT
scored in the first innings to take a 1-0 lead. They would score three runs in
the top of the third to take a 3-0 lead.Potsdam
didn’t get its first hit until the bottom of the fourth when Grebinger
connected for a solo homerun.Vollmuth
and Tierney’s solo shots in the sixth would tie the game 3-3.The Bears were down to their last out in the
bottom of the seventh when Grebinger and Breivogel had back-to-back
singles.Vollmuth then laced a single
into the outfield to bring in the game winning run.

Vollmuth Named SUNYAC Player of the Week
(POTSDAM, NY)
Potsdam’s Dana Vollmuth has been named the State University of New York
Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Softball Player of the Week. A sophomore
catcher, Vollmuth (Grest River/East Islip) hit .500 for the week, going
12 for 24 in eight games adding two home runs and seven RBIs. She also
had six runs scored and a stolen base.
With a .417 batting
average on the season, Vollmuth is currently the Bears leading hitter.
She also leads her team in runs and RBIs with 14 each.

Brower's Homerun Lifts Team to Victory
(POTSDAM, NY)- Jessica Brower (Staten Island/Susan Wagner) hit a two run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the women’s softball team a 4-3 win over New Paltz in the first game of a doubleheader.
Brower was 2-3 on the day and she also had a double, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Dana Vollmuth (Great River/East Islip) was 1-3 and Allison Breivogel (Bellmore/W.C. Mepham) was 1-2. Brittany Pawlowski (West Seneca/West Seneca) scattered seven hits over seven innings giving up three, one walk, and she struck out five.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first 3 ½ innings of the game as neither team could score a run. The Bears had runners on second and third in the first inning but Allison Smiddy (Ft. Covington/Salmon River) popped out to third base. Potsdam again had a runner on third in the second inning but could not bring in the runner. The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when Brower doubled to bring in Danielle Tierney (Champlain/Northeastern Clinton). Brower later scored when Lacey Malbeuf (Harrisville/Harrisville) reached on an error by the New Paltz shortstop to put the Bears up 2-0.
New Paltz would score three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. They would hold that lead until the bottom of the sixth. Pawlowski walked and was replaced by pinch runner Megan Strough (Lorraine/South Jefferson). The next batter was Brower who hit a deep fly ball past center field to give the Bears the lead. Pawlowski came on to pitch the seventh and only gave up a single to preserve the victory.
New Paltz won the second game 8-0 in five innings. Breivogel was 1-3 and Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore/W.C. Mepham), Shayleen Soller (Brasher Falls/St. Lawrence Central), and Malbeuf all went 1-2. Katie Nawrot (Clarence/Clarence) pitched 4 2/3 innings giving up 10 hits, eight runs (five earned), two walks, and struck out one. Meaghan Patterson (Malone/Franklin Academy) pitched 1/3 inning giving up only one hit.

Bears Defeat Plattsburgh 6-5
(PLATTSBURGH, NY)- The
women’s softball team fell behind 5-1 but scored five runs in a wild
sixth inning as they held on to defeat Plattsburgh 6-5 in Game 1 of a
doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. It is the second win over the
Cardinals in program history and the first since 2005.
Brittany
Pawlowski (West Seneca/West Seneca) pitched a complete game giving up
five hits, five runs (three earned), five walks, and striking out four
to get the victory. Dana Vollmuth (Great River/East Islip) went 2-3
with a homerun, two runs, and one RBI. Allison Breivogel (Bellmore/W.C.
Melpham) was 1-3 with a double, one run, and one RBI.
The Bears
were in a 4-0 hole in the first inning but got on the board in the
second on Vollmuth’s solo homer. The Cardinals pushed another run
across in the third on an error by catcher Susan Garrett.
Potsdam
rallied in the sixth inning when Allison Smiddy (Ft. Covington/Salmon
River) was hit by a pitch and Vollmuth walked. Jessica Brower (Staten
Island/Susan Wagner) and Pawlowski both struck out swinging. Danielle
Tierney (Champlain/Northeastern Clinton) singled scoring Smiddy.
Garrett then singled to load the bases. Breivogel walked to bring in a
run. Tierney then scored on a passed ball. Lacey Malbeuf
(Harrisville/Harrisville) reached on an error which brought in Garrett.
Plattsburgh pitcher Bri Allen was replaced by Tanya Fedyshyn who gave
up a hit to Potsdam’s Heidi Grebinger (Bellmore/W.C. Mepham) which
scored Breivogel to give the Bears the lead. The inning ended on a
Smiddy fielder’s choice which got Malbeuf out at third.
The only
threat Plattsburgh had was in the bottom of the sixth when Danielle
Gjergji singled with two outs and stole second. Amy Woo then grounded
out to Pawlowski to end the inning.
Plattsburgh came back to win
the second game 9-1 in six innings. Katie Nawrot (Clarence/Clarence)
took the loss for the Bears and went 3.2 innings giving up nine hits,
four earned runs and two walks. Meaghan Patterson (Malone/Franklin
Academy) pitched 1.1 innings giving up five hits and three earned runs.
Ashley McCoy (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) pitched 1/3 inning giving
up one hit and two earned runs. Vollmuth went 2-3 with one RBI.
