The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team travels to San Jose, Costa Rica for a seven-day volleyball tour beginning Aug. 4.
During the visit, the team, which will return to New York on Aug. 10, will play a trio of Costa Rican teams and practice daily throughout the week. Potsdam players and coaches will also enjoy tours of local attractions, outdoor activities, community service and other presentations and entertainment.
“We’re excited about competing under international rules against teams from another country, as well as experiencing another country and its culture,” SUNY Potsdam coach Steve Pike said. “Hopefully the girls will develop some memories that will last a lifetime.”
As part of their community service project, the Bears will spend time with over 200 children living in an orphanage.
“Hopefully our team will bring some joy to the kids’ lives,” Pike said. “It should be a really neat experience.”
The volleyball tour, which is conducted by Costa Rica Sports Tours, Inc., provides the Bears an opportunity for additional practice and training as well as a team bonding experience.
The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team has never traveled outside of the United States in the program's history.
