POTSDAM, NY- Cortney Poirier (Moira/Bruston-Moira) continued her hot play of late as she scored a career high 37 points and the women’s basketball team knocked off visiting New Paltz 66-60 on Friday night at Jerry Welsh Gymnasium. With the win, the Bears improve their record to 4-13 (3-7 in SUNYAC).
Poirier also had 10 rebounds for her second straight double-double performance. Aimee Kellicutt (Lisle/Broome CC) added 16 points and six rebounds and Rachel Graf (Elbridge/Jordan Elbridge) had 11 points for the Bears.
Carly Minehan had 16 points for New Paltz.
Poirier scored 16 first half points to give Potsdam the lead. Their biggest lead was 10 at 7:01. The Hawks would go on a 7-0 run to trail by three with 3:24 on the clock. Following a jumper by Graf and a layup by Poirier, New Paltz scored a free throw and a three-pointer to again trail by only three at halftime 27-24.
A Minehan jumper to start the second half made it a one point game. The Bears started to pull ahead but the Hawks came back and only trailed by five at 11:10. A 16-5 Potsdam run would give them their biggest lead of the game, 57-41, with 6:58 remaining. A 13-0 New Paltz run would get them back into the game and only trail by three with 5:10 left. They would still trail by three with 2:51 remaining, but Kellicutt hit a jumper and two free throws to increase the Bear lead to seven at 1:42. The Hawks would only add one more free throw in the final 1:06 as they missed two three-point attempts and the Bears came away with the victory.
The Bears host Oneonta tomorrow afternoon at 2 pm.
