Bears tie Spartans, remain unbeaten in last five

POTSDAM, N.Y. ? The SUNY Potsdam women?s hockey team extended its unbeaten streak to five games Tuesday with a 1-1 tie against Castleton State in a non-conference affair at Maxcy Hall Ice Arena.

After winning last weekend?s Rutland Herald Invitational in Vermont, the Bears (5-7-1 overall) continued their unbeaten run in the New Year with a strong defensive effort and solid goaltending from sophomore Jen Conophy (Burlington, Ontario), who finished with 26 saves.

Potsdam carried play for the majority of the contest but was unable to find the back of the net for a second time.

?We started to play desperate hockey in the last eight minutes or so,? Potsdam coach Jay Green said. ?Our level of intensity increased, but we didn?t necessarily play quite as disciplined as we should.?

Junior Caitlin Manahan (St. Albans, Vt.) recorded the Bears? lone goal just over two minutes into the contest, diving for a deflection in front of the crease off a pass from junior Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario).

Castleton (4-6-2) evened the score in the third period with 12:55 to play on a power play opportunity, spoiling Conophy?s chance at her first career shutout.

Potsdam continued to pressure the Spartans in their defensive zone, peppering the Castleton defense with 21 shots in the third period. The two teams went back and forth in the five-minute extra period, but neither team was able to threaten.

After winning a program-record four straight and remaining unbeaten in its last five, players and coaches are hopeful for more success as ECAC West play continues this weekend.

?It?s good to have four or five wins without a loss,? Green said. ?We just have to make sure we?re ready to play extremely hard and disciplined when we arrive in Elmira this weekend.?

The Bears return to the ice this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, at No. 6 Elmira. Friday?s game is set to begin at 7 p.m., while Saturday?s contest is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
