POTSDAM, NY- Sacred Heart jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as they defeated the women’s hockey team 5-2 on Friday night at Maxcy Hall Arena.
It was 3-0 Pioneers with eight minutes left in the first period when the Bears got on the board. Monique Gagner (Massena/Tilton School) found Amanda King (Akwesasne/Cornwall Typhoons) for the goal to make it 3-1.
The game would stay that way until late in the second period when Brittany Westlake’s (Georgetown, ONT/Brampton Thunder) shot bounced off Stephanie Simons’(Stratford, ONT/Bluewater Hawks) skate to make it 3-2. It was as close as the Bears could get as Sacred Heart tacked on two more goals for the victory.
Both teams had eight penalties each but neither were effective on the power play as Sacred Heart went 0-for-6 and the Bears went 0-for-7.
Sacred Heart outshot Potsdam 45-33.
Hillary Hitchman (Potsdam/Oswego State) started in goal for the Bears and made 27 saves. Jen Conophy (Glenmont/Albany Ice Cats) came in relief in the third period and had 13 saves. Emily Sira started for the Pioneers and had 12 saves in the first period. Raelene Sydor came in for the second and third periods and made 19 saves.
Both teams play again tomorrow at 2 pm.
