POTSDAM, NY- The women’s hockey team held visiting Oswego to two first period goals but could not convert on scoring opportunities as they fell 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Hall Arena.
Oswego scored their first goal of the game on a short-handed breakaway by Emily Grippin. Grippin would later assist on the second Oswego goal.
Following an Oswego penalty, the Bears finally capitalized in the second period when Courtney Laughlin (Gramblis, MD/Princeton Tiger Lillies) scored her first goal of the year to make it 2-1.
Neither team could generate any offense in the third period. Potsdam killed off three penalties to thwart any Oswego advantage. Nicky Bougie (Ingelside, ONT/Cornwall Typhoons) missed a shot on a breakaway with 6:41 left to play. Stephanie Simons (Stratford, ONT/Bluewater Hawks) also had an opportunity to tie the game as was denied by Oswego goaltender Emi Williams. The Bears pulled goaltender Hilary Hitchman with 38 seconds left but Oswego held off the advantage.
Both teams were nearly even in shots with Potsdam holding a slight 24-23 advantage.
Hitchman had 21 saves in goal for the Bears. Williams had 24 saves for the Lakers.
Both teams play again tomorrow at 3 pm.
