(POTSDAM, NY) Despite jumping out to an early 1-0 lead on their host, the Lady Bears were denied 2-1 in Wednesday’s soccer game at St. Lawrence.
Potsdam scored the game's first goal when Cortney Poirier (Moira/Brushton-Moira) fed Heather Johnson (Ogdensburg/Heuvelton) whose arching shot caught the top left corner of the net after just 3:25 of first period action.
Late in the game, with only seconds left to play, the Bears almost tied the Saints as Poirier fired a shot toward the far post on a breakaway. SLU goalie Abby van Geldern tipped it wide for just her second save of the game.
Between Potsdam’s first and last shots the Saint’s tied the game at 26:14 on a Kristina Peso connection then took the advantage at 36:41 when Becca Townsend scored.
Starting Potsdam goalkeeper Nicole Volpi (Bethlehem/Bethlehem) had 10 saves in first period action while reliever Sarah Casey (Potsdam/Potsdam) tallied 10 saves in second period play.
The Bears, now 6-9-1, next game will be on Sunday (10/25) at 1 pm when they host Morrisville State.
