Bears sweep Day 1 of Oneonta Invite

ONEONTA, N.Y.?The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (2-0) swept past Hartwick College and Emmanuel College on the first day of the Oneonta Invitational. The Bears rolled past the Hawks 3-0 and outfought the Saints 3-2. Senior setter Jenna Blujus led the Bears with 18 kills, 35 assists and 28 digs. Senior middle hitter Sara Anderson had 16 kills and senior setter Lauren Manzo recorded a team-high 39 assists.

New Bears head coach Josh Stokes was pleased with what he saw in his Potsdam debut.

"I think volleyball wise we did really well," said Stokes. "It was definitely a good day for Potsdam. We played very well against Hartwick and everything was moving very fluidly. We looked really good. The game against Emmanuel was tough, but we fought through it."

Against Hartwick in the first match of the night, Potsdam dispatched the Hawks by 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 counts. Junior outside hitter Liza Fields led the attack with seven kills. Sophomore libero Allie Romaniello had 19 digs, while Manzo and Blujus chipped in 15 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Bears traded set victories with Emmanuel by scores of 25-13, 23-25, 25-18, 22-25 and 15-13. Blujus had 12 kills, 22 assists and 17 digs. Anderson finished with 11 kills and three aces. Manzo chipped in five kills and 24 assists. Junior outside hitter Tia Wright totaled eight kills and junior outside hitter Sharon Ofori, Fields and freshman middle/outside hitter Sarah Becker each added seven. Romaniello had another strong defensive performance with 21 digs.

These players really impressed their coach on the first day of the season.

"I have to say the dynamic duo of Lauren (Manzo) and Jenna (Blujus) is really starting to pave the way for us. Their leadership and volleyball has been absolutely amazing. Allie (Romaniello) did a great job defensively and served and received well for us. Tia (Wright) is stepping up at net and really tore it up today. I think Sarah Anderson put a few holes in the floor along with her counterpart Sara Becker. They're both playing really well."

The Bears are back in action tomorrow at noon when they battle Kean University in a rematch of last season's ECAC Upstate Tournament.
