Volleyball: Short-handed Bears fall to St. Lawrence
The short-handed SUNY Potsdam volleyball team fell to host St. Lawrence 25-16, 25-21, 25-18 in a nonconference match on Wednesday night at Burkman Gymnasium in Canton.
The Bears (13-15 overall, 5-4 SUNYAC) were without senior setter Jenna Blujus (Baldwinsville, N.Y. / C.W. Baker), its team leader in service aces (72) and digs (384), and second on the team in assists (384) and kills (214) and third on the team in blocks (29).
Senior setter Lauren Manzo (Clovis, Calif. / San Joaquin) led Potsdam with 13 assists, seven digs and three kills.
Senior middle hitter Sara Anderson (Lake George, N.Y. / Lake George) and junior outside hitter Liza Fields (Duanesburg, N.Y. / Duanesburg) each chipped in with four kills apiece. Junior libero Gabby Arana (Williston Park, N.Y. / Herricks) had a team-high 13 digs.
But the combination of Lexi Brown (12 kills) and Lauren Carey (13 assists) proved to be a difficult pair to solve as the Saints (20-9 overall, 8-4 Liberty League) prevailed on a night in which it brought awareness to Breast Cancer Awareness month under its "Dig Pink" theme.
Potsdam is already locked into the SUNYAC playoffs fifth seed and will play against No. 4 Plattsburgh at SUNY New Paltz on Nov. 8. The Bears still have two remaining tune up games before the playoffs left on the regular season slab with matches versus St. John Fisher at 10 a.m. and Alfred University at 12 p.m. on Saturday in Rochester, N.Y.
