Bears fall twice on Day 2 of VPI; Clarkson claims title
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The SUNY Potsdam volleyball team (4-5) fell in matches to SUNY Canton (6-1) and Saint Michael's College (3-1) on the final day of competition at the Victory Promotions Invitational. Clarkson University easily handled Norwich University and Plattsburgh State to finish the tournament with a 4-0 record and the tournament title. Golden Knight senior libero Erika Chin claimed Most Valuable Player honors, while Bear senior setter Jenna Blujus was one of nine players to earn all-tournament honors.
In the early match, Potsdam fell behind the Roos early and was unable to catch up. Canton swept the Bears by scores of 25-11, 25-19, and 25-19. Senior middle hitter Sarah Anderson led Potsdam's offense with nine kills. Blujus added five kills, 13 assists and 14 digs, while junior libero Gabby Arana chipped in 15 digs.
In the finale, Potsdam stormed out to a 2-0 set lead with victories of 25-18 and 25-23, but couldn't put away the Purple Knights. Saint Michael's rallied for three straight wins of 25-23, 25-22 and 15-11. Again Blujus was a bright spot for the Bears with 16 kills, 20 assists and 23 digs. Anderson added 11 kills and Arana posted 30 digs. Freshman libero Sloane Campbell finished with 15 digs.
Potsdam is back in action when the Bears head to the RIT Invitational next Friday for a 5 p.m. showdown with the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets at 5 p.m.
