Women's soccer topped by Golden Eagles on Senior Day
POTSDAM, N.Y.—The College at Brockport (10-4-1, 5-3-1 SUNYAC) defeated the SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (5-11-1, 2-7) 3-0 on a windy, cold day at Maxcy Turf Field. Prior to the game, the Bears celebrated captain Kate Clauss' (Bloomfield, N.Y./Bloomfield) career on Senior Day.
In the first half, the Golden Eagles controlled the play territorially, but had a difficult time cracking Potsdam's defense. Brockport finally got a shot on goal in the 34th minute as senior midfielder Annie Terilli (Brockport, N.Y./Brockport) lofted a high shot over Potsdam senior goalie Lisa Bates (Galway, N.Y./Galway) for a 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder Courtney Szczesniak (Liverpool, N.Y/Liverpool) assisted on the marker. Potsdam evened out the play after the goal with several shots of its own, but the score remained the same at the break.
Both defenses were stifling early in the second half and the offenses struggled to create scoring chances. In the 76th minute, the Golden Eagles drew a penalty kick. Sophomore forward Katie Frieh (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) converted at 77:03, beating Bates to her left. Five minutes later, Frieh struck again, heading in a corner kick from senior defender Katie Dykes (Honeoye Falls, N.Y./Honeoye Falls-Lima) to make it a 3-0 contest.
In goal, Bates finished with six saves, while Brockport junior goalie Laura Thompson (Victor, N.Y./Victor) made two stops for the shutout.
The Bears wrap up the season with their most wins ever under third-year Head Coach Mark Misiak and with their most conference victories since 2007.
