Bears retain Jones Cup, down Roos 2-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.?The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (3-4-1) improved to 3-0-1 against SUNY Canton (3-4) in the Boyd Jones Cup with a 2-0 victory Wednesday night. Junior assistant captain Kristin Webster and freshman midfielder Kaylen Van Wagner scored for the Bears. Canton is still looking for its first goal in Jones Cup play since the series started in 2010.

Potsdam wasted no time getting on the board in the first half. Webster was awarded a long direct kick in the sixth minute. Roos freshman goalie Brittany Rotach appeared to have a bead on the ball, but it slipped through her hands for a Bears' score. At 21:39, junior captain Kate Clauss set up Van Wagner who beat Rotach with another long shot. Potsdam didn't score again in the period, but controlled the play from midfield. Canton was held without a shot until 38th minute. The Bears carried the 2-0 lead into the break.

The play evened out a bit more in the second half. Canton had a few chances early, but Potsdam's defense continued to hold. The Bears' offense moved the ball deliberately in the final 45 minutes, creating a few quality chances, but didn't add any insurance. The play got more physical as time wound down, with a few players exiting early due to injury.

Potsdam freshman goalkeeper Michaela Cole earned the victory without a save in the first half. Fellow Bears freshman goalie Lauren Haase made three saves in the second half to preserve the shutout.

Potsdam outshot Canton 19-6 and edged the Roos in corner kicks 3-2.

Bears Head Coach Mark Misiak was happy with the win, but had hoped for a stronger effort from his players.

"It was a decent performance, but we told the girls all season long that good enough isn't good enough," Misiak said. "Our performance was just that, good enough. So I'm pleased with the result obviously and pleased to get a win. I'm also pleased that everyone got into the match tonight, but we've got to be so much better in conference play. We're looking forward to a very testing, but fun match against Plattsburgh this weekend.

The Bears are back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they host the Cardinals in their SUNYAC opener.
