No. 21 SLU edges Potsdam, 1-0

POTSDAM, N.Y.?The SUNY Potsdam women's soccer team (2-4-1) held 21st ranked St. Lawrence University (6-0-1) to just one goal with a strong defensive performance in a 1-0 loss on Saturday night. Saints sophomore midfielder Emily DePoy scored the contest's lone goal.

The game started very even with tight defense and most of the play at midfield. Slowly St. Lawrence was able to tilt the field toward Potsdam's goal. In the 16th minute, Saints junior midfielder Holly Wark launched SLU's third corner kick of the contest. DePoy was in position to head the ball past Potsdam freshman goalie Lauren Haase for the eventual game-winner. The Bears defense rebounded after the goal and didn't allow another strong scoring chance for the rest of the half. Potsdam's offense moved the ball well in the SLU end for the final minutes of the first half, but entered the break down 1-0.

The Saints nearly doubled the lead in the 51st minute. Senior forward Erika Gobeille received a long pass in on the left side of the box. She fired to the right, but Bears freshman goalie Michaela Cole dove to her left and got a piece of the ball. She then recovered to smother it before it crossed the line. Potsdam's defense continued to diffuse SLU offensive opportunities, while struggling to get their own in gear. The trend continued for the rest of the game as the Saints fired plenty of shots high or wide of the Bears' net. Despite a strong defensive effort, Potsdam was unable to create a chance for the equalizer.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey West made two saves to earn the shutout victory for SLU. Haase made two saves in the first half for the Bears, while Cole finished with seven in a scoreless final 45 minutes.

"I was pleased with the overall effort for 90 minutes," said Potsdam Head Coach Mark Misiak. "Credit St. Lawrence. They're a fantastic team with lots of good players. I told the girls that was one of the best team's we'll face all year. That was just a great performance by our girls. They fought so hard for 90 minutes."

The Bears are off until next Wednesday, when they host SUNY Canton in the fourth annual Boyd Jones Cup.
