Helios Network Storage

Helios/Helios3 is the name of our central storage server for faculty & staff. Helios3 is the new file server that has replaced functionality of Helios for department shares. If your department share is on Helios3, use the instructions below and use helios3 instead of helios.

Faculty/staff helios personal space is unchanged at this time, however we do recommend that you begin to make use of OneDrive as part of Office 365. If offers much more storage space and is available on every device type and directly via the web portal for O365.

Students do not have Helios for personal storage space, instead use Microsoft's OneDrive as part of Office 365.

How do I reach Helios while on Campus in a Computing Facility?
When on-campus, if you log into a lab machine your home directory is auto-mounted.
- For Windows lab computers, the My Documents folder is mapped to your Helios automatically. Or, go to Start->Run and type in \\helios. The folder titled with your CCA name is your "Home Directory".
- On Mac OSX lab machines, look for a shortcut called "Home Directory" on the desktop.

How do I reach Helios while off Campus?
How do I reach Helios with my personal computer?
I'm Faculty/Staff, what is the best way for me to get to Helios with my work computer?

- When off-campus you can connect to Helios using any computer connected to the Internet with a VPN connection; in which case you can use the same connection methods as if you were on campus (below).

- When on-campus with a personal computer, or if you are Faculty/Staff with a work computer, or connected via VPN, please visit the links on the left side of this page for connecting information depending on the computer type that you have.

What are Group Shares and how do they relate to Helios?
Your personal Helios space for private data, while Helios3 is for department (group) shares.

What are the Helios Quotas and why do I get messages about them?
Staff and faculty are limited to 1.5GB of storage for personal Helios and 50MB of storage for WWW2. Users who exceed their quota will receive several HELIOS QUOTA ALERT e-mail warnings until the situation is rectified. Any helios accounts that stay in this state too long will be locked out.

Faculty may request quota increases. Please realize that storage space is finite, and not all requests can or will be granted. Consider using OneDrive which offers a considerable increase in storage over Helios.

You may check your quota anytime by visiting http://squirt.potsdam.edu.

I've clicked "Network" in the sidebar to find Helios, it isn't there?
Network browsing for computers on the campus network is very unreliable and shouldn't be used to locate network services. With literally thousands of devices on our network many browsing services simply time-out trying to locate everything. Using one of the methods to the right is the way to connect to Helios or any other network server.
