Base Specifications

Below are the base specifications for computers recommended for purchase. However, these specifications are subject to modification up until the orders are placed as vendor changes are out of our control. You can request a quote using our Tracking System which lets you create quote request ticket or view the status of your existing tickets. Alternately, you can email itservicedesk@potsdam.edu with your quote request.

Of note: most computers, printers, and monitors are select items available on State Contract. They tend to be business models and, as such, consumer grade devices are often unavailable for us to quote.

Finally, please remember that all technology purchases of any kind must be approved by CTS to ensure compatibility and base specifications with our infrastructure.

Redeployment of Old Computers

CTS has developed a policy in regards to the "trickledown" of older computers as well as the purchase of new items. Check in the list below to see if your hardware meets the minimum requirements for redeployment.

CTS provides the following recommendations for your department trickledowns of older computer equipment. Please review this information and contact the IT Service Desk (x4444, itservicedesk@potsdam.edu) if you have any questions or are uncertain of the specifications of a system.

Below are the minimum recommended specifications for old/trickledown computer hardware:

Mac OS logoApple Macintosh

Processor: Intel Core i5 2.2GHz w/Thunderbolt
RAM: 8GB
Hard Disk: 250GB
Operating System: macOS 12.6 or above
Display: 21" LCD

Windows logoWindows

Processor: Intel Core i5 2.2GHz
RAM: 8GB
Hard Disk: 250GB
Operating System: Windows 11
Display: 21" LCD

Software Support

Both Microsoft and Apple have announced that there will be no further development, support, or security patches for Windows 3.x/95/98/NT/XP/7 (Microsoft) and all Mac operating systems prior to macOS 11.7 (Apple). What this means to the college is that these systems are vulnerable to a malicious attack should any exploits be found in the operating system. These unsupported operating systems could be used by a malicious party to disrupt the campus network or even gain access to confidential information, the minimum specifications are in response to this concern.

Also of concern is software compatibility. Already companies such as Adobe and Microsoft are producing software that will not run on the older versions of these operating systems. Campus resources such as the web Content Management System no longer support these operating systems.

Windows 11

Windows 11 represents a significant change in the Windows Operating System. Windows 11 will be deployed on all new Windows computers including any that require "reimaging" for reuse or due to problems with their current operating system. Some of our computing hardware can only support up to Windows 10, in this case a reimaged computer will include this version until it reaches end-of-life in 3rd quarter 2025.

Consultation

CTS offers consultation with departments, faculty and staff concerning the purchase of new equipment. Contact the IT Service Desk (x4444, itservicedesk@potsdam.edu)

Requirements

  • All computers must have a minimum of Windows 11 or macOS 13.3.
  • All computers must be purchased with a current license of Microsoft Office (included in the CTS Software bundle you will see in your quote.)
  • All computers will be automatically delivered to Stillman Hall for setup and installation by CTS.
  • All computers must have, at all times, current anti-virus software (included in the CTS Software bundle you will see in your quote.)
  • All the latest OS patches to provide both security and stability for the campus network.

Review

New computer & accessory purchase requisitions are automatically sent to CTS to be reviewed before the order is placed. This is to ensure that:

  • They meet the above requirements for the operating system.
  • They are from a reputable/preferred vendor.
  • Contain a minimum level of technology.
  • Contain the best value for the College by taking full advantage of State Contract pricing.

Supported Printers

CTS is currently implementing the mandated SUNY Print Initiative. This SUNY-wide project seeks to lower printing costs and increase security by:

  • Strategic placement of high volume printers.
  • Elimination of small and mid-duty printers that have an overall higher cost of operation.
  • Removal of directly connected printing devices.
  • Centralize supplies and printer models to achieve lower cost for supplies.
  • Have all devices with card swipes to print and/or QR codes tied to accounts for secure printing and retrieval of jobs at any location.

Purchasing of new printers are currently on hold pending final stages of this plan in coordination with the SUNY consultants and chosen vendor.

Locally Shared Printers

Our computers do not support "local sharing" of a printer. Local sharing is where one desktop is attached directly to a printer via a USB or Parallel cable and the printer is shared via the computer's network connection.

Personally Owned Computers

CTS does not provide support for personally owned computers or any peripherals attached to them.
