CTS has developed a policy in regards to the "trickledown" of older computers as well as the purchase of new items. Check in the list below to see if your hardware meets the minimum requirements for redeployment.
CTS provides the following recommendations for your department trickledowns of older computer equipment. Please review this information and contact the CTS Helpdesk (x2083, helpdesk@potsdam.edu) if you have any questions or are uncertain of the specifications of a system.
Below are the minimum recommended specifications for old/trickledown computer hardware:

Both Microsoft and Apple have announced that there will be no further development, support, or security patches for Windows 3.x/95/98/NT/XP SP2 (Microsoft) and all Mac operating systems prior to OS X 10.5 (Apple). What this means to the college is that these systems are vulnerable to a malicious attack should any exploits be found in the operating system. These unsupported operating systems could be used by a malicious party to disrupt the campus network or even gain access to confidential information, the minimum specifications are in response to this concern.
Also of concern is software compatibility. Already companies such as Adobe and Microsoft are producing software that will not run on the older versions of these operating systems. Campus resources such as the web Content Management System no longer support these operating systems.
Windows 7 represents a significant change in the Windows Operating System. Windows 7 will be deployed on all new Windows computers including any that require "reimaging" for reuse or due to problems with their current operating system.

CTS is currently quoting Dell printers with State Contract Pricing. The pricing is extremely aggressive, the warranty is excellent (5 years on most models with on-site or exchange service), and all models are duplex (two-sided) and network capable. |

CTS no longer quotes, recommends, or supports new HP printers. We are unable to get warranty service in our geographic location and would be forced to ship printers either to HP or the nearest local service provider at the College's expense. This would leave locations without a printer for weeks at a time which is unacceptable. Further, HP's printer pricing isn't as competitive as Dells and the warranty is 1/5th the duration. Finally, many of HP's newer drivers are incompatible with our existing print server infrastructure. CTS will continue to support and maintain our existing fleet of HP printers for as long as parts, supplies, and drivers for current operating systems are available. |
CTS does not support "local sharing" of a printer. Local sharing is where one desktop is attached directly to a printer via a USB or Parallel cable and the printer is shared via the computer's network connection.
CTS does not provide support for personally owned computers or any peripherals attached to them.
