Faculty and Professional Staff Participation

 

Commencement is the highlight of the academic year and is a meaningful occasion for our graduates and their families.  All faculty and professional staff are encouraged to honor their students by fully participating in Commencement.

If you plan to process at either ceremony, it is important that you indicate your intention so that a seat will be available for you at Commencement.

Regalia


Faculty participants are expected to wear appropriate academic regalia. Academic regalia may be purchased or rented through The College Store.

If you need to rent regalia, please submit your request through our on-line form at: http://www.potsdam.edu/current/commencement/facultyorderform.cfm

The College Store must receive your request by March 18, 2013. Orders placed after March 18, 2013 will include a $25 charge for express shipping.

Volunteers


Commencement is the highlight of the academic year and a momentous occasion in the lives of our graduates and their families. It is also the largest event held at SUNY Potsdam and its success requires the help of the entire campus community. If you haven’t volunteered before, please consider doing so this year.

Some duties include: distributing Commencement programs, ushering individuals to appropriate locations, answering basic questions for campus visitors and assisting with crowd control. A large number of volunteers are needed to make the ceremonies go smoothly, and your help is genuinely appreciated.

A meeting will be held on Monday, May 6 at 3:00 p.m. in the 7th floor boardroom of Raymond Hall to review procedures and tasks.


Master’s Ceremony - Saturday

 

  • 8:15 a.m. – Volunteer check-in begins, Bishop Hall, C123
  • Before 9:00 a.m. - Faculty and Professional Staff meet in Bishop Hall C119 to line up and robe for processional.
  • 8:30 a.m.
    Childcare available in the Crane Commons until noon. Childcare is free, but you must register your child by calling (315) 267-2100.  Children will be provided with snacks and beverages.  Please notify caregivers if your child has allergies or other health concerns.
  • 9:15 a.m.
    Procession begins to move toward Hosmer Hall
  • 9:30 a.m. - Hosmer Concert Hall
    Master's Ceremony Begins
  • Reception will take place immediately following the ceremony outside on the Crane Plaza, weather permitting.

 

Bachelor’s Ceremony – Sunday


  • 7:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. - Lehman Dining Hall
    Commencement Breakfast Buffet
    Breakfast is provided by the Commencement Committee to thank you for participating in this important event. If you plan to attend the breakfast, please RSVP by Monday, May 6 by contacting Kathryn Deuel at x2102 or deuelkj@potsdam.edu
  • 8:30 a.m. - Volunteer check-in begins – Dexter’s Cafe
  • 9:00 a.m.
    Childcare available in the Merritt Hall Gymnasium until 1:00 p.m.  Childcare is free, but you must register your child by calling (315) 267-2100.  Children will be provided with snacks and beverages.  Please notify caregivers if your child has allergies or other health concerns.
  • Before 9:30 a.m.
    Faculty and Professional Staff - meet Between Crumb Library and Merritt Hall
    Undergraduate Students - East Side of the Crumb Library (between the library and Merritt Hall) - Processional instructions and line up.
  • 10:00 a.m.
    Procession begins to move toward the ceremony site.
  • 10:15 a.m.
    Bachelor's Ceremony begins.
  • Approximately 12:30 p.m.
    Outside reception to follow ceremony, weather permitting.

 

Bachelor’s Commencement Emergency Weather Plan


A decision to move the ceremony inside will be made by 6:00 a.m. on Sunday only if extreme weather conditions are forecast (lightning, freezing temperatures, etc).

If the emergency plan is implemented, an email will be sent to all graduates, and an announcement will be made on local radio stations and at www.potsdam.edu/current/commencement
  

Emergency Ceremony A – 10:00 a.m. – Hosmer Hall

  • All Crane, Visual Arts, and Theatre and Dance Majors will graduate in Ceremony A at 10:00 a.m. in Hosmer Hall. Other majors will graduate in Ceremony B.
  • 8:30 a.m. - Volunteer check-in, room C119, Bishop Hall.
  • 9:30 a.m. - Faculty should report to room C119, Bishop Hall to line up. The stage party should report to room C123, Bishop Hall to line up. 
  • Ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m.
  • A reception for all students and guests will be held in the Maxcy Fieldhouse following Ceremony B at approximately 1:00 p.m.



Ceremony B – 11:30 a.m. – Maxcy Gymnasium

  • All remaining students (other than Crane, Visual Arts, and Theatre and Dance) will graduate in Ceremony B at 11:30 a.m. in Maxcy Gym.
  • 10:00 a.m. Volunteer check-in, Maxcy Fieldhouse 
  • 10:45 a.m. Faculty & Stage Party, report to Maxcy Fieldhouse to line up.
  • Stage party will process first, followed by the faculty, and form funnel at the stairs. Students will process through faculty and stage party lines. 
  • Ceremony begins at 11:30 a.m.
  • A reception for all students and guests will be held in the Maxcy Fieldhouse following Ceremony B at approximately 1:00 p.m.
