Theatre and Dance banner 3

Dance is the study of expressing ideas using the human body, an artform both ancient and new. The new dancer is a thinking dancer, with depth of thought and feeling far beyond the limits of traditional ballet and modern dance.

Dance majors do study ballet and modern dance technique, but they also explore the art form through courses such as improvisation, composition, repertory and movement theory and notation. There are new ways to approach dance technique, repertory and notation, thanks to the explosion of knowledge in science and technology so a liberal arts setting is perfect.

Drama is the study of theatre, from acting to staging productions and literature to design. Theatre is a collaborative artform, which encourages creative problem solving, requires the setting and meeting of long-term goals, and involves the understanding and analysis of human behavior. SUNY Potsdam graduates have experience and insight which professional organizations, graduate schools, and a wide variety of employers value highly.
