The SUNY Potsdam family strives to enrich the lives of those around us and sees community service as a valuable way to serve. SUNY Potsdam looks beyond our campus borders for ways to engage and impact our world. Help bring Bear Pride and power to your community’s needs!

Who can volunteer?

  • SUNY Potsdam alumni, friends, family and students. Everyone is welcome to participate!
  • We strive to have all volunteer projects accessible to everyone, but check individual projects for any age restrictions or special training requirements.

No projects in your area?

  • Consider creating a project. We need projects throughout New York State, and anywhere alumni live!
  • You help coordinate a site and we’ll help you enlist volunteers. Learn More about Creating a Project!
  • Or do something informal like helping a neighbor on October 21. Register or post on social media #potsdamproud and we’ll make sure you’re counted as a participant!

    Project: Interior painting and/or yard work.

    The Elizabeth Stone House partners with adult and child survivors of domestic violence and related trauma – mental illness, housing instability and substance misuse – to achieve safety, stability, and overall wellbeing, thereby contributing to the strength, resiliency, and health of the community we serve.


Central New York

  • Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center

    Project: A variety of outdoor activities are planned: pumpkin carving and site preparations for 'Animals of Halloween' festival held later that day; general fall cleaning, gardening, and trail maintenance. Inclement weather indoor activities include: general cleaning, organizing, sorting, and possible painting of Visitor Center materials; weaving paracord into bracelets for the bookstore/giftshop.

    Family friendly

    Project: Wear your comfy yard work clothes and bring your gardening tools! We'll be planting bulbs, cleaning up existing planters, and working on other projects at the library.

Finger Lakes / Western New York

  • Mount Hope Cemetery

    Volunteers needed: 20-25
    Time: 9 a.m. - Noon
    Volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone at all times while on the grounds.

    Project: Volunteers are led by experienced cemetery landscape professionals through routine landscaping maintenance (such as mulching, weeding, raking, and planting) and special projects. Event is held rain or shine. Volunteers must be able to lift 30lbs, and dress weather and work appropriately (boots and long pants). Tools, safety equipment (gloves, eye and ear protection) and water are provided, but feel free to bring your own provisions. Sunscreen and insect repellent is advised.

Hudson Valley

  • Dutchess County Outreach Farm Stand

    The Dutchess Outreach Farm Stand sets up every third Friday of the month and offers residents of the City of Poughkeepsie FREE produce. Volunteers help with setup, distribution, and breakdown.

North Country

  • Catholic Charities

    Project: All the windows in the building were recently replaced, need help sanding and painting moldings. Older children only please. The mission of Catholic Charities is to respond to the needs of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

    Inviting the involvement of the Church and the community, Catholic Charities fulfills this mission by empowering people through direct aid, counseling, community programs, outreach and advocacy. Our mission is based on Gospel values of respect for the dignity and sanctity of human life, charity and justice, according to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

    Restrictions: ages 14 and up

    Project: sorting, organizing, and hanging clothing

    A non-profit thrift store selling good quality used clothing and non-clothing items at nominal prices for people in Potsdam and the surrounding communities. Their voucher program provides free clothing to people and families in need, with no reimbursement of funds required.
  • Deep Root Center

    No children

    Project: Fall clean up Deep Root Center (DRC) provides the facilities, environment, resources, and support for young people who choose to take charge of their education while living and learning without school.

    Deep Root Center, a member of the Liberated Learners Network, strives to provide all young people with access to interest-driven, life-long learning practices outside of a formalized school setting. DRC provides resources and community connections that empower families to successfully navigate the legal and social aspects of educating without school.

    Project: Raking, mowing, removing trash. If possible, bring your own rakes, gloves, shovels, wheel barrels, and tarps. Anything that might be helpful with outdoor clean up.
  • Helping Hands

    Project: Cleaning the kitchen and surrounding area. Helping Hands is a compassionate ministry that distributes food, furniture, household items and financial assistance to families and individuals in need.

  • Local Living Venture
    Canton, NY

    Volunteers needed: 1-20 This Project is Full
    Time: 1:30 - 4 p.m.
    Project: Road side clean up in Canton. Supplies will be provided.

    The Local Living Venture works to inspire and enable people to adopt more healthy, local and sustainable ways of living.

  • Massena Humane Society

    Time: Noon - 3 p.m.

    Project: Painting and cleaning service.

    The Massena Humane Society is a private animal shelter located in Massena, New York, receiving up to 1000 homeless cats and dogs every year. We are currently contracting with the townships of Brandon, Dickinson, Louisville, and Massena to provide housing and care for the many dogs and cats that find themselves homeless in these communities. All of our animals will be spayed/neutered, and vaccinated before being adopted to loving and permanent homes. Our mission is to protect and care for domestic animals by providing shelter, cruelty investigations, and rehabilitation for those who cannot speak for themselves.

    Project: Fall clean-up in the garden

    The Potsdam Consumer Cooperative, Incorporated is owned and operated by its members and is dedicated to meeting the community’s need for specialty and whole foods at the lowest possible cost. As a member of the local community interested in its well-being, we attempt to use local sources whenever feasible. We strive to provide a pleasant shopping experience and working environment, with an emphasis on education, shared information and developing our relationship with the community. We encourage environmental respect through the goods we sell and in the manner in which we conduct our daily operations. We are committed to providing a model of responsible business practices based on the cooperative principles of open membership, democratic control, limited return on share capital or investments, return of surplus to members, continuous education, cooperation among cooperatives, and concern for our local community.

    Project: general tiding, cleaning, and dog walking.

    Founded in 1957, the Potsdam Humane Society (PHS) has been providing love and humane care for unwanted, abandoned and sick animals in Potsdam and surrounding areas for more than 50 years. With the support of the Potsdam community and surrounding townships, PHS delivers services and protection to over 1,200 cats, dogs and other animals each year.

    Adults only due to lifting of heavy objects.

    Project: Need help lifting and moving furniture, organizing their storage and potentially helping with some website opportunities.

    The Potsdam Public Library is committed to serving the North Country as the premier media resource center with the best in resources and services. Come on in and see what we have to offer you.

  • Potsdam Village Parks

    Project: Raking, tiding flower beds, general fall clean up. Rakes, bags, material provided.
  • Salvation Army

    Time: 9:00 a.m. - Noon

    Project: Helping with food pantry and thrift store. The store just moved and help is needed to move items and unpack them. Also, help needed moving items onto storage shelves and onto floors.
    The Salvation Army of Massena meets the needs of our community through physical and spiritual assistance. With our Heart to God and Hand to Man we are here to serve and love in our community.

    Project: Cleaning and organizing studio spaces and offices for upcoming studio tour.

    Since the 1970's, SLC Arts been working to build creative community capacity in St. Lawrence County and beyond. We do this by: fostering community participation in the Arts and artist involvement in the community; encouraging appreciation of and investment in the Arts; and cultivating partnerships and promoting collaboration to expand cultural opportunities.
  • Traditional Arts in Upstate New York (TAUNY) Event

    Project: Each year, the North Country Heritage Award is presented at a party at The TAUNY Center. The whole community is invited to help us celebrate the recipients and learn about their contributions to North Country culture. TAUNY is looking for volunteers to help set up, run and take down the event.

    TAUNY is a nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing the folk culture and living traditions of New York's North Country.

  • Waddington Family Resource Center

    Project: Sorting and displaying donations of winter clothing.

    This food pantry serves the townships of Waddington, Madrid, Lisbon, and Louisville.
