Campus Alert Update #2: Maxcy Hall

08.27.13

Following a sweep by hazardous materials teams and responding agencies, the source of the ammonia leak in Maxcy Hall has been contained and fixed. Crews determined that the source was a compressor leak in the ammonia cooling system for the College's new Ice Arena, which remains under construction. The leak has been repaired, and the campus is still continuing to evaluate the entire system.

Since the leak was first reported this morning, air samples have been taken throughout the building. At no time did the facility reach any levels of life safety concern.

However, there is still currently a lingering strong ammonia odor in the building. The College is working on airing out the facility to let the odor dissipate. The safety perimeter will remain up during this process, and the building will remain closed tonight.

It is still anticipated that Maxcy Hall will open for classes and activities tomorrow, Wednesday, August 28.

Campus officials will conduct a walk-through of the building at 6 a.m. tomorrow to review air quality, before confirming whether business can resume in Maxcy Hall. Please look for a confirmation of the building's status via email tomorrow morning to check on this.

We regret any inconveniences today's closure may have caused. The College would like to once again recognize the tremendous efforts displayed today by first responders from throughout the region who helped address the situation.
