Michael Rygel (geology) was a contributing author on a paper in the December 2013 volume of the International Journal of Coal Geology entitled "Temporal and spatial distribution of ostracodes across the Pennsylvanian–Permian boundary interval in eastern North America." The paper documents how changes in fossil ostracods (small crustaceans) record the infilling of an ancient ocean basin that once covered much of eastern North America. His co-authors include Neil Tibert (University of Mary Washington), Shelby Sanders (University of Mary Washington), Scott Elrick (Illinois State Geological Survey) and John Nelson (Illinois State Geological Survey).
