Message from the Chair

I think that every freshman begins the first day on campus with a healthy mix of trepidation and excitement. . . .

It was no less true for me my first day as a student at Potsdam. The joy that had accompanied that wonderful letter of acceptance back in the spring had transformed into a rabble of butterflies in the pit of my stomach, and as my family drove away after helping me unpack my life into one half a dorm room, I found myself feeling lost and more than a little lonely. I was to discover over the next few years that Potsdam was to become far more to me than a college campus- more than a series of classes and tests and friends. It was to become a touchstone in my life. A place where I would return for years afterward to remind myself of what was truly important- to never stop challenging myself, to continue to learn and try to be a good mentor to those seeking my help, to think about more than what I can accomplish in the moment, about what kind of legacy I want to leave behind.

The walls of Potsdam reverberate with energy- a kind of resonance created by the confluence of past, present and future minds. Though I am sure that this energy can be found in many places of higher learning, there is something special that binds the students and alumni of SUNY Potsdam. Perhaps it is the shared experience found in weathering the Potsdam winters or the particular joy we North Country folk find in the first signs of spring. All I know is that for me, this place became an oasis, a source of support and joy, and that feeling has continued to this day. I can never repay the debt I owe to my professors, to my mentors and friends, even the very bricks of this institution, but continuing my relationship with Potsdam is my way of saying thank you.

Thank you for joining us and for showing your gratitude to this jewel in the SUNY crown. Your efforts will not go unnoticed- they will become part of that beautiful resonance that rings throughout SUNY Potsdam and the Potsdam Community for all time.
