bibliographies usually include journal articles among the publications they list. See the section on "Bibliographies" on the guide you have received. If the bibliography is "annotated" then there are descriptive or critical comments on the articles listed, a valuable feature.
Indexes, usually updated annually or more often, list articles by subject and author. They are mostly available either in paper or on the library web site - (www.potsdam.edu/library).
Some of the indexes of interest to historians are:
Online indexes
- Academic Search Premier This online resource indexes the contents of a great many journals, in all fields. Links to full-text of the articles is often available.
- JSTOR. This is both an online collection of journals, and a search tool for articles in that collection. It’s strength is the deep retrospective file of journals usually from the journal’s beginning.
- Project Muse This online collection of recent journal articles is especially strong in the humanities, including history.
- ProQuest Journals Another online search tool for journal articles.

Finding the articles: The most complete listing of available journals is provided through the link called Periodical Title Search on the library homepage. Type in the TITLE of the journal you are looking for - to see whether it is available here. Check to see what dates are available either in paper or online. If the title is not available or your article falls outside the years we have of the journal, you can request the article through Interlibrary loan.
Use the “ArticleLinker” button wherever it appears in a search result to see if the library has the journal in paper or in another online source.
Identifying more historical periodicals: See this comprehensive list - Historical periodicals; an annotated world list of historical and related serial publications. (Ref D 20.A1 B6 1961); and for journals published in the U.S. Canada, and the U.K., this more current guide: Historical journals: a handbook for writers and reviewers. (Ref D 10.A1S73 1993)
