Location: The College Archives and Special Collections and the Crane Archives are located in the Snell Room on the second floor of Crumb Library.
Use: Use of our material is welcomed. SUNY Potsdam students, faculty, and staff may have access to our collections, as well as anyone outside the college community. Use is by appointment, and advance appointments for weekdays 8 to 5 are made by calling archivist Jane Subramanian at 267-3326, or in her absence, Holly Chambers at 267-3312. Please call at least two days in advance.
Material is used in the Snell Room itself under supervision of an archivist. Exceptional use is made only at the discretion of the archivist.
Photocopying: Material may be photocopied with permission of the archives staff. Permission to photocopy may be denied for materials deemed to be too fragile or because of legal restrictions, including privacy concerns.
Off-site queries: Our College Archives and Special Collections is glad to help with questions from public patrons. Quick inquiries by phone, email, or letter are handled as time allows. All extensive research requires visiting the archives in person.
Collections:
College Archives
Papers, photographs, and selected memorabilia relative to the history of SUNY Potsdam, including Potsdam Normal (formed in 1869) and some material related to the earlier St. Lawrence Academy, formed in 1816.
Crane Archives
Papers, photographs, tapes, and selected memorabilia relative to the Crane School of Music. Includes Julia Crane Papers and Helen Hosmer Papers, as well as theses written for graduate degree programs at the Crane School.
Special Collections
Books on the history of Northern N.Y., Adirondack region, St. Lawrence River and Seaway, and county histories of New York State.
Snell Collection containing papers of Bertrand Snell, Potsdam businessman and member, U.S. Congress (1914-39). The Snell Collection includes a collection of Clifford Berryman Cartoons; the originals have received conservation/preservation treatment, but reproductions are available for easy viewing in the Southeast and Northeast corners of the second floor of Crumb Library.
David Martin Collection containing congressional papers of former Congressman Martin. Preliminary work has begun on the organization of this new collection.
DSpace
Digital repositories of documents, images, etc. DSpace at SUNYConnect is the digital archives for the SUNY system, and links to DSpace at individual SUNY institutions.

Opportunities for Students
In addition to using the archives, the College Archives and Special Collections offers other opportunities for interested students. Credit bearing internships ranging from 1 to 3 credit hours are available related to several academic department areas.
Volunteer workers are also welcome and there are different projects available depending on interest and particular skills. If you are interested in finding out more information, please contact College Archivist Jane Subramanian at 267-3326, or subramjm@potsdam.edu.
Mission Statement:
The mission of the SUNY Potsdam College Libraries Archives and Special Collections is to identify, collect, preserve, and make available in a secure manner special library materials that support the instructional programs and needs of the college’s students, faculty, and administration. The Archives portion of the collection serves to permanently collect the valuable historical records of the college to properly document its long history. As possible, the Archives and Special Collections strives to provide learning opportunities for students in the use, proper handling, and importance of primary resources, as well as information regarding related electronic resources and legal issues.
The SUNY Potsdam College Libraries Archives and Special Collections supports the public service mission of the college "?to the local community, the state, the nation and the world" and is available to alumni, outside researchers, and community patrons as staffing allows.
