Using Cookies with the EZProxy Server

Service restricted to SUNY Potsdam students & staff

What are cookies?

Cookies are files generated when you connect to a web site. These files (stored on your local hard drive) record information about your computer & connection, allowing the remote site to retrieve this information as you access additional web pages at its site. For the library's proxy server, cookies are used to "remember" your username and password so you don't have to login again during your session.

How long do they stay active?

The EZproxy server cookie only stays active until you close/quit your browser window, or your machine crashes. The next time you try to access a proxy-controlled resource, you'll again be prompted for your username & password.

How do I activate them?

You must adjust your browser settings to allow cookie files to be generated & stored on your machine -- a process commonly referred to as "accepting a cookie" [from a remote web site]. Setting locations vary from browser to browser.

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Select "Preferences" from the Firefox Menu.
  2. Select the "Privacy" category.
  3. Select either "Accept cookies from sites" - "until they expire" or include the URL for the resources you want to use in list of "Exceptions" for which you will accept cookies.
