On Monday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m., SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music’s Hosmer Hall will be filled with the sounds of Dr. Lyn Ellen Burkett on harpsichord. Her program of music of the 20th and 21st centuries consists of six pieces by American composers including, Bryan Burkett, and Crane School composer Paul Siskind.
Dr. Lyn Ellen Burkett lectures in music theory at The Crane School of Music and is an accomplished performer of harpsichord and piano. She holds a B.A. degree in music from the University of Central Florida, a Master of Music in piano performance from Ithaca College and a Ph.D. in music theory from Indiana University. Prior to joining the Crane faculty Dr. Burkett completed a teaching stint at Indiana University as Visiting Lecturer in the Music in General Studies department. A published music professional, Dr. Burkett has had her research presented at prestigious conferences on both the regional and national level, and has also written articles and book reviews that appeared in several music media outlets, such as the Journal of the Society for American Music, Popular Music and Society, and Indiana Theory Review.
Aside from performing, Dr. Burkett has said that she especially enjoys teaching music fundamentals and music history to non-musicians and amateur musicians. While at Potsdam, she taught a course on music reading for choir singers, which was offered free of charge to interested community members.
Dr. Burkett’s performance February 15 at 7:30 p.m. at SUNY Potsdam’s Hosmer Hall is an opportunity to hear contemporary harpsichord for musicians and non-musicians. This event is free and open to the public.
