The Corporation for National and Community Service named SUNY Potsdam to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America’s communities. The Community Service Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a school can achieve for its commitment to service-learning and civic engagement. Honorees for the award were chosen based on a series of selection factors including scope and innovativeness of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
“We are honored to be named to such a distinctive list and have our outstanding people and programs recognized at a national level,” said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller. “SUNY Potsdam is committed to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. As a first-rate liberal arts institution, we strive to develop students who are global citizens who are not only concerned with social issues, but who also take action.”
Some examples of SUNY Potsdam’s community service include the Applied Theatre Service Learning course, SUNYAC Leaf Raking Project, Relay for Life Cancer Walk, English as a Second Language Mentor Program, UNICEF Fundraiser, BOCES and SUNY Potsdam Arts Program, Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club Art Teaching Internship and Extended Day Program at the St. Regis Mohawk Elementary School.
