Fall victim to an "Art Attack" at SUNY Potsdam

10.22.09

Dozens of works by SUNY Potsdam students will be exhibited in the College’s Gibson Gallery for “Art Attack,” the annual juried all-student exhibition that will run from Thursday, Oct. 29, to Saturday, Dec. 5. The opening reception will be held October 29 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Art Attack, a SUNY Potsdam tradition for more than 25 years, features artwork ranging from photographs and computer graphics to paintings, sculpture and ceramics.

A goal of the exhibition is to acknowledge the accomplishments of the College’s student-artists and offer them concrete encouragement as they pursue their studies.

All students on the SUNY Potsdam campus were invited to enter works in “Art Attack” for consideration by a professional artist-juror.

This year’s juror is Clarkson University’s Director and Assistant Professor of Digital Arts and Sciences Dave Beck. Beck received his Master of Fine Arts and Master of Arts degrees in sculpture and extended media from University of Wisconsin-Madison and his Bachelor of Arts degree in studio art and ancient studies from St. Olaf College in Minnesota.

Beck has shown his paintings nationally, including exhibits in Chicago, Madison, Minneapolis and San Diego. His most recent solo exhibition, “Insufficient Avatars,” opened this month at Overture Center Gallery in Madison, WI.

In addition to choosing the artwork for the exhibition, Beck also will award five distinct prizes. These include the $100 Art Department Award, $50 President’s Award, $50 Dean’s Award, $50 Provost’s Award and $25 Bookstore Gift Certificate from PACES.

The Gibson Gallery, located at Brainerd Hall, is free and open to the public Monday and Friday from noon until 5 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday from noon until 7 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 4 p.m.
