Several performing groups, students and faculty from SUNY Potsdam will present “The Blue Danube Operetta Gala” on Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall.
The operetta will combine the works “Merry Widow,” “Fledermaus” and “The Gypsy Baron” and Gilbert & Sullivan works “HMS Pinafore,” “Pirates of Penzance” and “Mikado.”
In a mythical Japan, Ko-Ko, played by SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller, has been appointed Lord High Executioner and must find someone to execute or he’ll lose his job.
Waltzes will play with “The Waltz King” Johann Strauss II and his masterpieces. Delightful operettas like the “Gypsy Princess,” “Der Vogelhändler” (“The Bird Seller”) and the risqué “Cabaret Songs” of Arnold Schoenberg also will be presented.
The Potsdam Pointercounts, A Sharp Arrangements and Potsdam Pitches are also taking part singing large scenes from Gilbert & Sullivan. Eight actors from the Department of Theatre and Dance will portray with pirates, sailors, the Japanese court and gypsies.
The Children’s Choir of Crane will sing a medley from “HMS Pinafore,” giving that most famous of all waltzes “The Beautiful Blue Danube” a chance to compete with the Racquette River.
The grand finale will feature “Let’s be Brothers and Sisters” from “Fledermaus.”
The operetta is free, and the public is invited to attend.
