Children's Chorus of Crane to kick-off Diversity Festival

10.22.09

The Children’s Chorus of Crane will kick-off the entertainment at the 16th annual World in Potsdam Festival Saturday, Nov. 7, at 12:15 p.m. in the Barrington Student Union Multi-Purpose Room.

They will sing the South African selections “Siyahamba” and “Freedom is Coming.”

The choir performs regularly throughout the North Country and is committed to promoting choral and personal excellence in youth.

Founded by Artistic Director Dr. Heather E. Eyerly in September 2004, The Children’s Chorus of Crane began as one 43-voice treble community choir encompassing all ages and ability levels. Five years later, it has developed into two ensembles, including the Junior Choir (grades two through five) and the Senior Choir (treble voices grades six through 12).

In its short tenure, the chorus has shared the stage with the Potsdam Community Chorus, served as guest artists for the Orchestra of Northern New York, participated in the Annual Candlelight Concert hosted by The Crane School of Music that is aired annually on PBS and premiered Arthur Frackenpohl’s “North Country Seasons,” a five-movement, grant-supported commission in partnership with the Potsdam Community Chorus featuring the poetry of our young artists.

The World in Potsdam Diversity Festival will run from noon to 4:30 p.m. The festival will feature additional musical performances by the Crane Latin Ensemble, the Potsdam Pointercounts, A# Arrangements and Golden Knotes, as well as Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam students.

There will be food samples from around the world, hands-on crafts, demonstrations, international displays and a piñata party.

A shuttle will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. to pick up festival-goers at Clarkson University’s Cheel Campus Center, Swan Landing, 75 Market Street and The Clarkson Inn to bring them to the Barrington Student Union.

The festival and all of its activities are free of charge.

An evening performance sponsored by Community Performance Series will feature Sweet Honey in the Rock at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. A pre-concert Talk with SUNY Potsdam Crane faculty member Dr. Paul Siskind will take place at 6:30 p.m.
