Guest trombonist Rick Davies to heat up the stage with Crane Latin Ensemble

10.29.09

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane Latin Ensemble will feature “Salsa Dura en el Norte” with guest artist Rick Davies on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Hall.

The concert will feature music composed by Davies, including the international hit “Salsa Strut.”

A specialist in jazz and Afro-Caribbean music, Davies is the leader of a Latin jazz ensemble called Jazzismo. He is also musical director and lead trombonist with the internationally acclaimed Salsa Picante led by pianist Wayne Gorbea.

The Crane Latin Ensemble is directed by Associate Professor of Music Education Dr. Marsha Baxter, senior Christopher Battles from Oswego and junior Matthew Dintrone of Charlton.

The ensemble performed as featured young artists at the International SAT Festival in Monterrey, Mexico, along with Panamanian percussionist Renato Thoms in 2007. They have also performed in concert with legendary Latin jazz trombonist Chris Washburne and Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s baritone saxophonist Mitch Frohman.

North Country Public Radio journalist Todd Moe writes, “It’s dynamic music from a group of talented young people who played their hearts and souls out. I could have grinned all night.”

The Crane Latin Ensemble will take the stage with Ottawa’s Capital Brassworks in March 2010.

The concert is free, and the public is invited to attend.
