The 16th Annual World in Potsdam Diversity Festival will bring together members of the Potsdam community in celebration of the village’s unique and diverse cultural heritage through music, dance, art and food on Saturday, Nov. 7, from noon to 4:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam’s Barrington Student Union Multi-Purpose Room.
Following the opening ceremonies at noon, a performance by the Children’s Chorus of Crane will kick-off the day’s entertainment at 12:15 p.m. The winners of the World in Potsdam Literary Contest will then be announced and the winners will read from their works.
The Crane Latin Ensemble will bring their sassy sounds to the stage beginning at 1 p.m. Under the direction of Dr. Marsha Baxter, associate professor of music education, the group features voice, percussion, piano, guitar, brass and woodwind performers.
Additional music performances will be provided by a cappella student groups the Potsdam Pointercounts, the A Sharp Arrangements and the Golden Notes will take place at 2 p.m.
SUNY Potsdam’s dining services staff under the direction of George Arnold will prepare an array of delectable delights from around the world. The tasty cuisine will be served from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
In addition, there will be numerous activities, hands-on crafts, demonstrations and international displays for everyone to enjoy. Children will particularly enjoy the Piñata Party from 2 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
The day’s festivities will conclude with SUNY Potsdam and Clarkson students showing off their multi-faceted talents from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A shuttle will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. to pick up festival-goers at Clarkson University’s Cheel Campus Center, Swan Landing, 75 Market Street, The Clarkson Inn to bring them to the Barrington Student Union.
The festival and all of its activities are free of charge.
An evening performance sponsored by Community Performance Series will feature Sweet Honey in the Rock at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. A
pre-concert Talk with SUNY Potsdam Crane faculty member Dr. Paul Siskind will take place at 6:30 p.m.
This internationally renowned a cappella ensemble, a vital and innovative presence in the music culture of Washington, D.C. and in communities of conscience around the world, invites audience members to open their minds and hearts and think about who we are and how we treat each other and the planet itself.
