Four SUNY Potsdam students recently returned to campus with a first place trophy from the Intercollegiate Invitational Business Ethics Competition held in Chicago during the 17th Annual Conference of the Ethics and Compliance Officers Association (ECOA).

The team members were seniors Michael Brockway of Fort Covington, Andrea Dishaw of Syracuse, Peter Dishaw of Syracuse and Laura Thomas of Hemlock.

SUNY Potsdam won the first place trophy in the 10-minute Ethics Issues Only Competition.

Awards were also presented in the Ernst and Young 90-second Ethics Challenge, Best Ethics Analysis in the Preliminary Round, Highest Score in the Preliminary Round, Emmons Final Round Award and the Kerrigan Award for the Final Round Runners Up.

“This underscores the value of a nationally accredited professional program that is well grounded in the liberal arts,” said Dr. William Amoriell, dean of the School of Education and Professional Studies. “Business administration majors are well prepared to become independent thinkers who are able to excel in a variety of situations.”

Eight undergraduate and graduate teams were invited to the competition hosted by Loyola Marymount University. SUNY Potsdam competed against Claflin College, La Salle University, McKendree University, Montgomery College, University of Illinois, University of Oregon, and University of St. Thomas.

“We were initially stunned when the team name was called at the awards banquet. We were so excited to win the first place trophy,” said Dr. Ed Portugal, professor of business administration, who coached the team. “With only three weeks to prepare, they worked late nights and weekends to build a case, research the issue and rehearse their presentation. I was amazed by the students’ commitment, dedication and hard work.”

SUNY Potsdam has consistently performed well in regional business ethics case competitions held in Vermont, national competitions held in Maryland, international intercollegiate competitions held in Los Angeles and local competitions held in Plattsburgh and Potsdam.
