10.29.09

The internationally renowned a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock will perform as part of the 2009-2010 Community Performance Series Guest Artist Series, “A Celebration of the Voice,” on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall.

Founded in 1973, Sweet Honey continues in their 36th season as a vital and innovative presence in the music culture in communities of conscience around the world. The group is comprised of Ysaye Maria Barnwell, Nitanju Bolande Casel, Aisha Kahlil, Carol Maillard, Louise Robinson and Shirley Childress Saxton.

Rooted in a deeply held commitment to create music out of the rich textures of African American legacy and traditions, Sweet Honey in the Rock possesses a “stunning vocal prowess” that captures the complex sounds of blues, spirituals, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip hop, ancient lullabies and jazz improvisation.

Sweet Honey’s vast discography includes 23 soulful albums, including the Grammy-nominated “Experience... 101” released by Appleseed in 2007 and “Still the Same Me” released by Rounder Kids in 2000. Their songs have also made a considerable amount of appearances on other recordings. Most recently, Sweet Honey’s recording of “Wade in the Water” was featured on the season premiere of ABC-TV’s hit series “Grey’s Anatomy.”
