Crane Latin Ensemble to present painting, sound, sounding salsa

10.08.09

Sounds and images of salsa will swirl together Friday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theater as the Crane Latin Ensemble and visual artist Dr. Amy Swartele return to the stage for another inter-arts collaboration.

The program, titled “Painting Sound, Sounding Salsa,” is a blend of classical and contemporary salsa and Latin jazz. It will include the hits “La Hija de Lola” by Raul Marerro and “Coro Miyare” by Johnny Pacheco.

The Crane Latin Ensemble is directed by Dr. Marsha Baxter, associate professor of music education, who will be assisted by senior Chris Battles of Oswego and junior Matthew Dintrone of Charlton.

Dr. Swartele is a professor in SUNY Potsdam’s Department of Art.

In 2007, the ensemble performed as featured young artists at the International SAT Festival in Monterrey, Mexico, along with Panamanian percussionist Renato Thoms. They have also performed in concert with legendary Latin jazz trombonist Chris Washburne and Spanish Harlem Orchestra’s baritone saxophonist Mitch Frohman.

National Public Radio journalist Todd Moe writes, “It’s dynamic music from a group of talented young people who played their hearts and souls out. I could have grinned all night.”

The event is free, and the public is invited to attend.
