People across the globe love to use food to help celebrate special occasions, and the World in Potsdam Diversity Festival will offer attendees an opportunity to celebrate the foods of several cultures as part of its festivities on Saturday, Nov. 7, from noon to 4:30 p.m. in SUNY Potsdam’s Barrington Student Union multi-purpose room.
Free samples of delectable cuisines from several different countries will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Dishes representing Indian, Middle Eastern, African, Caribbean, Asian, and Native American cultures will be served.
Potsdam Auxiliary College Educational Services Executive Chef Steve Maiocco will prepare several types of vegetarian, dessert, entree and side dishes. Attendees can try maharagwe (spiced red beans) in coconut milk from Kenya, picadillo from the Carribbean, and Moroccan carrot and raisin salad from the Middle East, just to name a few.
"Food is a tradition. We equate it with a certain time of year or certain times in our lives,” said Maiocco. “I think people are interested in how others celebrate with food. When people focus on what the food is about instead of what it is or where it’s from, they can wrap their arms around it.”
The World in Potsdam Diversity Festival not only highlights the world’s cultures and peoples but it also brings members of the Potsdam community together to celebrate its unique and diverse cultural heritage.
The festival will feature musical performances by the Children’s Chorus of Crane, the Crane Latin Ensemble and Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam students. There will be hands-on crafts, demonstrations, international displays and a piñata party.
A shuttle will be available starting at 11:30 a.m. to pick up festival-goers at Clarkson University’s Cheel Campus Center, Swan Landing, 75 Market Street and The Clarkson Inn to bring them to the Barrington Student Union.
The festival and all of its activities are free of charge.
An evening performance sponsored by Community Performance Series will feature Sweet Honey in the Rock at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall. A
pre-concert Talk with SUNY Potsdam Crane faculty member Dr. Paul Siskind will take place at 6:30 p.m.
