SUNY Potsdam recently won an award in the American Cancer Society’s Eastern Division for the top net percent increase in donations collected over 2008’s total, with a 31 percent increase in 2009.

With the help of nearly 700 people on 76 teams in SUNY Potsdam’s Third Annual Relay for Life, the event obliterated the $35,000 goal with a total of $50,982 raised.

Event organizers are hoping to do even better this year when Relay for Life returns to the Maxcy Field House from March 26 to March 27. Student, faculty and community volunteers are needed to make the event a success.

To get started, the Relay Committee will hold their kickoff meeting Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 7 p.m. in the Barrington Student Union Lobby. Kickoff is the time that teams, and especially team captains, can come and first sign up their team for Relay for Life.

The participation fee for this year will remain at $10, and cash, check, credit card and Bear Express will be accepted.

This year’s theme is “Through the Decades: How Purple has Evolved.”

Relay For Life is an event where caregivers, cancer survivors and teams come together in an overnight community celebration of life and cancer survivorship. The night honors cancer survivors and caregivers as well as pay tribute to those who have lost their battle with cancer.

Teams of people from all walks of life will take turns walking or running around a track relay style to raise funds to fight cancer. Funds raised from the Relay go to support American Cancer Society research, education, advocacy and patient service programs.

All cancer survivors are invited to celebrate their triumph over cancer by participating in a special reception and inspirational “Survivors’ Lap” to open the Relay For Life event.
