Crane Tuba-Euphonium and Trombone Ensembles combine for a night of brass

SUNY Potsdam’s Crane Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and the Crane Trombone Ensemble will present a program of contemporary compositions and transcriptions of early works Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Sara M. Snell Music Theatre.

Under the direction of Dr. Charles Guy the Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble will perform works by Stevens, Morely, Bateson, Corwell, Frescobaldi, Schumann and Crane Faculty Composer Dr. David Heinick. Senior student conductors Christopher Santantasio of Monroe and Hilary Soulia of Roosevelton will assist Dr. Guy.

Dr. Mark Hartman will direct the Trombone Ensemble. They will perform works by Wagner, Arwady, Brahms, Rimsky-Korsakov and Davis. Junior student conductors David Blumenthal of Monroe and Michael Boncimino of Mount Sinai will assist Dr. Hartman.

Approximately 50 students from the low brass studio of Drs. Guy and Hartman will participate in the program.

Dr. Guy joined The Crane School of Music faculty in the fall of 2002. His duties include instructing the Tuba-Euphonium studio, directing the Crane Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, coaching chamber music and teaching the tuba component of “Brass Techniques.”

He performs with the Potsdam Brass Quintet, Orchestra of Northern New York, and the Northern Symphonic Winds and serves as substitute for the Syracuse Symphony and Rochester Philharmonic Orchestras.

Dr. Guy is an active soloist whose recent conference and workshop performances include the 2008 Howard Hovey Tuba Day, 2003 and 2005 Northeast Regional Tuba-Euphonium Conference and the 2004 United States Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Conference.

In 1999, he won the Artist Division of Leonard Falcone International Solo Competition and has since served as an adjudicator for the competition. In the summers, he is the tuba and euphonium instructor at the Interlochen Arts Camp in Michigan.

He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and Master of Music degree from Michigan State University and the Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Akron.

Dr. Hartman is currently in his 24th year as the trombone instructor at The Crane School of Music. In addition to teaching studio trombone, he teaches brass techniques, coaches brass quintets and conducts the Crane Trombone Ensemble.

During his tenure in Potsdam, he has been a soloist with bands and orchestras throughout the northeast and presented numerous recitals and clinics at major conventions, universities and colleges. He has performed or presented at five International Trombone Festivals, numerous New York State Music Conferences, the Summit Brass Music Festival and the Skyline Brass Music Festival.

Dr. Hartman is the principal trombonist with the Orchestra of Northern New York, Northern Symphonic Winds, Potsdam Brass Quintet and performs regularly with the Burlington Choral Society Orchestra.

He can be heard on two Potsdam Brass Quintet CD’s, “La Rejouissance” and “The Art of Brass: The Compositions and Transcriptions of Arthur Frackenpohl.” He is the recipient of the International Trombone Association’s President’s Award for distinguished service as director of the 1999 International Trombone Festival, hosted at The Crane School of Music.

He also received a lifetime membership from the International Trombone Association in the spring of 2001 and was selected for the Mansfield University Music Alumni Honor Roll in 1992.

He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in music education from Mansfield University and both his Master of Music in trombone performance pedagogy and Doctor of Musical Arts in trombone solo performance degrees from Arizona State University.
