Vienna Boys' Choir to give special holiday concert

11.19.09

The Vienna Boys’ Choir, the world’s oldest and one of its most beloved choral ensembles, will delight a North Country audience in a holiday spectacular on Thursday, Dec. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Helen M. Hosmer Concert Hall as part of the 2009-2010 Community Performance Series Guest Artist Series.

With a history of excellence dating back to the late 1498, the Vienna Boys’ Choir is comprised of approximately 100 choristers between the ages of 10 and 14, divided into four touring choirs. The four choirs give nearly 300 concerts and performances each year for almost half a million people.

Each group spends nine to 11 weeks of the school year on tour. They visit virtually every European country, and they are frequent guests in Asia, Australia and the Americas.

The choir’s repertoire includes everything from medieval to contemporary and experimental music. Motets and lieder for boys’ choir form the core of the touring repertoire, as do the choir’s own arrangements of waltzes and polkas by Strauss. The choir also has a long tradition of commissioning new works.

Benjamin Britten wrote the vaudeville “The Golden Vanity” for the Vienna Boys’ Choir and even conducted its premiere at the Aldeburgh Festival in 1967.

The Vienna Boys’ Choir strives to create an environment in which boys can fully develop and realize their personal and musical potential. Choristers learn to express themselves on a professional level in many different styles of music, and they are provided with the tools to set them on the road to a professional career in music.
