Stepping up to the tee for the second year, Northland Associates of Syracuse will serve as the title sponsor for the 24th Annual SUNY Potsdam Scholarship Golf Classic once again.
Registration is still open for the 2012 Scholarship Golf Classic, which is committed to raising funds and awareness for student scholarships at SUNY Potsdam. The tournament will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Potsdam Town and Country Club.
This year’s event will feature the Canton-Potsdam Hospital $1 Million Shootout, the TJ Toyota $50,000 Shootout and The Fox 101.5 Ball Drop.
“Northland Construction has now for two year’s running demonstrated their strong support for students at SUNY Potsdam through their lead sponsorship of the golf classic,” said SUNY Potsdam President Dr. John F. Schwaller. “We at the College are grateful to Northland President Jim Tyler and his wife Charlene for once again leading the way with their generosity to the College’s scholarship fund.”
The 2011 Scholarship Golf Classic had a record-breaking year, raising more than $93,000 for SUNY Potsdam’s Scholarship Fund. Last year, 1,230 scholarship recipients were provided $2.2 million to support their SUNY Potsdam studies through the fund.
“The College’s goal is to support every deserving student who is working toward his or her educational and life goals,” Schwaller said. “It is only through the generosity of individuals and organizations throughout the region that we can hope to make this a reality.”
Other major sponsors this year include: Casella Waste Services; Honeywell; Mach Architecture & Engineering, Inc.; SYSCO Foodservice of Albany, LLC; Renzi Brothers, Inc.; Time Warner Cable Business Class, and Usherwood Office Technology.
TJ Toyota of Potsdam is the sponsor of the $50,000 Shootout, and Canton-Potsdam Hospital is the sponsor of the $1 Million Shootout. Golf participants must qualify for a chance in each of these thrilling events.
The Fox 101.5 Ball Drop is in its second year at the Scholarship Golf Classic. One lucky ticket holder will win half of the proceeds raised through the sale of numbered golf balls, which will be dropped on a practice green, with the closest to the hole winning. There are only 1,000 tickets available, which may be purchased on campus in the Fitness Center in Maxcy Hall or at the College Store in the Barrington Student Union, or in the community at the Potsdam Town and Country Club, the Massena Golf Club, or the Partridge Run Golf Course, Canton. Participation in the tournament is not required for a Ball Drop ticket purchase.
The golf format is a shotgun start at 10 a.m., with a six-person scramble that includes four flights for men and one for women, to be determined by total team handicap. Golfers are encouraged to form their own sixsomes, and golfers of all abilities and handicaps are encouraged to participate.
Teams will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations or sponsorships can be made online at www.potsdam.edu/golfclassic until Aug. 28.
Registration is $125 per person and includes a scholarship gift, 18 holes of golf, use of a cart, lunch, refreshments and a banquet dinner, as well as door, course and team prizes. Pre-registration is necessary for all golfers. Early registration is strongly encouraged. Team prizes will be awarded in each flight, and prizes will be given for many contests on the course.
The silent auction, one of the highlights of the day, concludes immediately following the tournament, around 5 p.m. The auction, which will be posted on the College’s website, is open for all to place bids. Items range from various golf packages to gift certificates for area restaurants to artwork and other unique and in-demand items. All proceeds will benefit SUNY Potsdam’s General Scholarship Fund.
